The locking up with a laptop is caused by using the IRDA ports on most laptops. They emit a continous IRDA signal to search for a device. Most people recommend a serial Irda device

Normally as long as you change the battery over with about 20 seconds all is fine, but others folks have found out that the IRDA problem seems to wipe all

Best advice is to use the IRDA device that VR3 recommend
