According to website, the artificial caverns are not off-limits to recreational divers. I'm not sure if there are any lessons to be learned here.

What was the water temp there? It doesnt sound like a bad place to dive.

I would have to disagree. There are things that can be learned here. However, unlike some others, I am not of the opinion that dropping smart remarks will stimulate the learning process.

Many, myself included, have dove in various cavern/caves before getting trained to do so. Hindsight has led me to the conclusion that I wasn't always as safe as I could have been. One small problem could have very quickly turned into a life and death situation, with death the more likely. From a previous post, the gate mentioned is 310 feet back, at a depth of 109 feet. Gas goes pretty quickly at that depth already, and adding in elevated consumption rates and over 300 feet back to the surface, it isn't hard to imagine a situation occuring where somebody doesn't make it back alive. Heck, the Ballroom at Ginnie is less than 60 feet deep, and nowhere near that far in, and people have died in there.

Frank, glad that everything turned out well.

Just to sum up: In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have gone into the cave, and I would certainly never do it on my own, and in fact, I'll probably never do it again. There are more interesting sites to dive without going to Vortex and doing that corridor. The experience was nice. I'd rather do reefs and wrecks...
Ah but you'd better not penetrate without proper training.:eyebrow:
