Many, myself included, have dove in various cavern/caves before getting trained to do so. Hindsight has led me to the conclusion that I wasn't always as safe as I could have been. One small problem could have very quickly turned into a life and death situation, with death the more likely. From a previous post, the gate mentioned is 310 feet back, at a depth of 109 feet. Gas goes pretty quickly at that depth already, and adding in elevated consumption rates and over 300 feet back to the surface, it isn't hard to imagine a situation occuring where somebody doesn't make it back alive. Heck, the Ballroom at Ginnie is less than 60 feet deep, and nowhere near that far in, and people have died in there.

I have to agree. I am one of the "many" mentioned above. I did overhead environments at least 4 times before taking a cave course and in retrospect it was among the stupidest things I've done. And that's without taking into account the effects narcosis can bring to the party...

"You don't know what you don't know and what you don't know can kill you" are some of the truest words I've ever heard spoken about overhead environment diving.

Yeah, some of us "cave guys" may come off a little harsh sometimes when we see people doing stuff that we know they shouldnt be doing. I try to be as diplomatic as possible, but it doesn't always come across that way. Regardless, I'm going to at least make sure that you're informed of the dangers of what you're attempting to do. If you decide to press on after that, your decision will be based on stupidity rather than ignorance. Been there. Done that. Luckily it worked out for me and I've since learned better.

Sure... contact Chickdiver to get your training done before then :)

I had the exact same thought, too.

Frank, I think you owe it to yourself to find a Cavern/Cave instructor who not only "can" teach cavern, but actively does so and actively cave dives. Check out this thread: http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=121296

There are a number of highly recommended cave instructors here at ScubaBoard. And if Rick says Chickdiver would be a good choice, that advice is probably just as good as the rest of the advice Rick gives here. That is to say, excellent.

I'd second that recommendation.

I'd dive with her anytime, anywhere. ;)
