Personally, I use the right shoulder dump valve and using my elbows I squeeze the BC against both sides of my chest. Besides dumping as much air as possible, I found that it kept my arms from moving which meant I was better streamlined. Also, cross your fins. It will streamline you even more and prevent you from accidently finning (that's a big problem with new divers).
Remember, you only need to get down to 12-15 ft. to really get your descent going. When I first started diving, I didn't realize this and when I looked up I thought I wasn't descending, which just caused tension, which led to "struggling" to get down. Try the " shoulder dump, squeeze, exhale and relax" method.
