Is speed an agency requirement for you? It seems to me that being able to do it while holding position and keeping an eye on your buddy is more important. (Slow is smooth--smooth is fast.) Agree with pointing your elbows forward, not out. Keep you head up too.

Nope, keep your head down (horizontal) looking towards the floor. Your neck must be straight, looking up or down causes problems. You want to maintain a relaxed posture!!!

I agree that smooth is slow, but my instructor demand 30 seconds start to finish. I think IANTD requires 40 for trimix.

Wrt. stretching: Most shoulder stretches do not address the External Rotation necessary to reach straight back with your elbow pointing forward. So when you do the "Latissimus Dorsi/Triceps Stretch" from the article don't let you forearm rotate "in" behind your back. Instead, grab your "stretching" forearm as shown and use your (non-stretching) thumb to add a light external rotation pressure: i.e. pressing on the inside of the stretching forearm to rotate it "out" and away from your head. That made a huge difference to me.

I personally would never keep my head in a horizontal position while performing a valve drill. I want to be able to see my buddies, the line, and that I'm not drifting. Losing my situational awareness is only going to cause me more problems than I've already got.

The only time I drop mine is to put my fist behind it so I can use my head to shove my hand back to the isolator. My Cave 2 instructor chewed me out repeatedly for even doing that.
