Trying to get a claim squared away. DAN informs me I gotta fill out their claim form, and that the healtchare provider (US based doctor in this case) has to also submit a couple forms.

I call the hospital billing department, they don't know what DAN is of course, and I'm told they "can't file claims with that kind of insurance", and that I'll have to just submit itemized billing info to DAN instead.

Curious if anyone else has encountered this.

DAN is secondary insurance. At the time of my claim many years ago my hospital billed both primary and secondary and the bill was completely paid by a combo of both.
Do you have a primary carrier at all?
