If I was going to buy a used D400 (just the second stage) what should I be looking for before I buy it? I will, of course, have it completely overhauled and checked out by a SP dealer, but that would be after the purchase.

DA Aquamaster will have all of the answers for you. If you don't have a D400, I would strongly advise that you buy at least one. I have several, and use them for all of my diving. No doubt, the very best regs I have ever used!

Some are easier to fine tune than others, depending on how much they have been used, how much metal is inside vs. plastic, and how well they have been taken care of. Some techs don't like to tune them because they take a little more time and skill to get it right, but once they are tuned, they are the easiest to breathe from than anything I have ever used. I have made a hobby out of learning how to tune them, and then tuning all of my own. Parts are still available for these as well.

You may want to clarify in your post if you are actually going to see, hold, and test the D400 before you buy it, or if you are buying based on a picture and description. If it performs well at all, and if it's not corroded or damaged on the inside, then I would highly recommend that you go for it!

Amen brother!
Love mine, I've used one from the first day I started diving,
If you want the "skinny" on them do what all the others have said , shoot Da Aquamaster a pm. The boy knows his ScubaPro.

I will probably pm DA, but in a way I was trying not too, since to be honest his posts are always so informative and helpful to just about anyone who reads them that I was hoping he would post here and then others could basking the glow of SP knowledge that shines from his posts (is that enough sucking up or should I continue do you think?)

Cyril,

I know for a fact that DA Aquamaster has a few regs recently serviced that he would be willing to part with. He mentioned something about d400s and balanced adjustables, both being extremely good performers. He also has a selection of first stages to mate them with (mk 10s, mk 20s, etc.).

Personally, I would rather spend $150 or so for a set from DA given that it will have been recently serviced by the SP guru than spend $80-$120 on an eBay reg that is of unknown condition and needing service anyway.

HTH
