My wife and I, along with 3 others from my LDS, just returned Saturday after a beautiful week of diving in Roatan. From the time we arrived to the time we departed we saw no noticable changes in security around the island and the taxi drivers ignored the one road block we did see, so all in all we felt fairly safe though out of touch due to slow internet and CNN's constant noise about MJs death.

Any complaints we have, and there are a few, have to do with the resort not the Coup d'etat.

The problem locating facts about the Islands is that the usual attitude seems to be "What happens on the Islands stays on the Islands; got to protect the tourist business...!

For anyone looking for additional sources of information, this monthly seems interesting: Bay Islands Voice - News on Roatan, Utila & Guanaja with the June issue showing coverage on May disturbances and more.

Let the mockery take pursuit.

Why would anyone mock a refernce to an on-scene local origination news source ?

The Bay Islands Voice has always told the good with the bad. I look at it as certain proof that your "what happens in Roatan" harangue is way off base.

If you wanted to be really, truly informational- you might have highlighted that the lead story "powderkeg" was now 60 days past and has become a non-story at this immediate late point in time. But, either because you didn't know that, or maybe even though you did know it was dated... and just enjoyed the usefulness of the now-inflammatory title- well, explaining the "dated" nature of the article makes it a lot less fun, doesn't it?

But thanks for posting a link to a perfect example of how you have, in the past, blown something way out of proportion....

Back in May, when this incident did occur- DaDon, you were constantly banging the drum about tourism safety and security, reminding all of the fear that any Bay Islands traveler should feel lest they dare take a trip to Roatan. DaDon, you wouldn't let up on that harangue for weeks.

And still, somehow, during May and June of this year, comparatively nothing really was felt, noticed, smelled or heard by a vacationing diver. But that's probably because they heeded all of your dire warnings you posted about rampant "civil unrest".

It will be interesting to see how the Bay Islands Voice handles the "coup" and its impact on the Bay Islands. Knowing their penchant for reality as I do, I'll wager that you won't be so quick to agree with their assessment when that edition gets freshly published.

I wonder if they have any stories about the divers deaths...?

What diver deaths?

Mockey is sometimes brought upon oneself.

What diver deaths?

...............................:bomb::monkeydance:

Likely, DaDon was making a veiled reference to his long winded harangue a few years ago about the loss of a DM and a diver, both on the same day at CCV. Altho it was apparently resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved, DaDon always believed that he was due all the ugly details. He could never quite understand that the release of those details was limited by the decisions of the involved parties. He stamped his feet here and elsewhere for three or more months.:banghead:

Previous to that, he was off on a prolonged rant in regards to not having any life jackets out and visible on the day-dive boats in Honduras. They were open deck affairs, diesel fueled (not known to ignite) and if an incident ever arose- most passenger divers would prefer jumping into the ocean with gear-on or just in their wetsuits. That earworm captivated his attentions for at least two months. No such incidents "requiring" the use of life jackets, much less the need to abandon ship, have occurred in 30 years as far as I can tell.

As I just stated previously, the more you read from individual posters, the more you read of their posting history, the better indication you'll get of the value of their information.

On a more positive note, in terms of better acquitting the Bay Islands Voice as a reputable news source, here A Bird's Eye View on the Impact of the Island's Growth they go into the fact that rampant land development (the new cruise ship facility being one of the featured), that Roatan was literally washing into the Sea.

You can read a lot from past BIV magazines here at Bay Islands Voice - Archive of Past Issues

They tell it like they see it, not much is spared.

Nope, it was a boat that tried to take us across the channel from Roatan to Utila without any life jackets at all onboard, a faulty transmission, and pouring a jug of trans fluid into a hot engine compartment with no fire extinguisher onboard.

That was 6 years ago, but I suppose you remembered in your warped version because it was your resort. Ah found it: link

Yes, we know your posting style too, value of info, referenced to my Spare Air - which I have never even considered owning, etc. - smokesreening.

Right now I would go diving somewhere else. Even if the Bay Islands stay relatively calm, confusion on the mainland is likely to cause commodity shortages on the islands, as has already been seen with fuel. The news each day demonstrates that there is a great deal of uncertainty as to how the events in Honduras will play out.

My resort? DaDon- I've been to more other places since my last trip to CCV than you have been in your entire career of diving.

No, I remembered it because it was one of the many things you just :deadhorse:

This just simply amazes me:

In China, today the government arrested 1,434 people after gunning down 156 people on the streets.

Yet, if you search Google, there is not a blip about "Is my upcoming trip to China safe?"

Go on DaDon, keep testifying. You'll find those strawberries.

Dead horse, huh? I posted on it in 2003. Don't remember bringing it up since until you did today.

Warped. Smokescreening. Amuse yourself.
