Titanium regulators comparison over non-titanium

Hello there

I have an Apeks XTX200 Status and IŽ´m very happy with its performance and think the status option gives me piece of mind when diving.

I dive 100% in tropic water, but IŽ´m impressed of what IŽ´ve read about Titanium regulators.

Could please describe me if there is much difference between the one I got and the Atomic T2 and the Scubapro MK25T/600T??

It would be useful if you can also compare those two in terms of performance and durability.

Ti regs are a wonderful way to get 2 or 3 times the money from a consumer while not really giving them anything significant in return.

You can save a bit of weight with a Ti reg, but they are much more limited in that they are not well suited to use with high percentages of nitrox and they offer no performance advantage over a chrome plated brass first stage of the same design.

The T2 and Mk 25T are both great regs, but as stated above, perform no better and are no more durabel than their brass and chrome counterparts.
 
Exactly, Titanium sparks very easily which is not a great combination with high-pressure gases with elevated oxygen levels. Ti regs are nothing more than bling. But you may be into that sort of thing if you are buying the XTX Status regs.
 
If you fly to the dive site with a hang glider it might be a benefit.
 
Considering that I have brass and chrome regulators that are well over 50 years old and some look as good as new (and most perform better than new), I don't see a big advantage on using Titanium or other materials.

Looking at the condition of my vintage regulators, I would say that a life expectancy of over 100 years is probably not unreasonable. Therefore, I have very little interest on a material that adds little improvement, but that has a large trade of with its cost, etc.



I think Titanium is a great engineering material for some applications. I own a number of ice climbing titanium ice screws. These screws are about 8 inches long; hallow tube about on inch in diameter. The traditional steel or stainless steel screws are much heavier and when you are climbing every ounce can make a huge difference.

Let's see, people get stainless plates, gigantic steel double sets and all sorts of other heavy stuff on purpose, but, purchase a regulator that is two onces lighter because it is titanium?

That said, call me gullible, I like the h, E, double LL out of titanium.

Main benefit of Ti Regs would be a reduction on corrosion when using then in salt water. Other than the metal types component while they would be equal to their non-Ti counterpart.

Disadvantage you are not recommended to use Nitrox mixtures in excess of XX percent with the XX percent based upon the manufacturer's recommendation. I believe Scuba Pro S600 MK 26 is 40 percent O2 max. Don't quote me on the percent but check with your respective manufacturer.

A few years ago I had picked up what I thought was some scrap 1"stainless steel tubing to make a boat bow rail, it turned out to be titanium. Probably the only titanium bow rail in existence for a 19 foot boat.
 
Don't buy a titanium reg, wait for the platinum one to come out. :D

Hey, don't laugh, there's a guy selling a gold plated MK10 on ebay. The things people do for fun....
