Dive Location: Heisler Park, Laguna Beach
Buddy(ies): Brandon Guerin, Tech Admin, Wrinkles, Saphire
Time: 12:17 PM
Bottom Time: 42 min
Max Depth: 37 fsw
Vis: 10-15 ft
Wave height: 1-2', occasional 3'
Temp at depth: 56F
Gas mix: Air

Comments: Attended the Wrinkles dive today at Heisler Park. Brandon and I hooked up with some Scuba Board folks, Ted, Anna, Jennifer, and others. The weather conditions were awesome, sunny, clear skies ... light winds and small surf conditions. We entered the water as a group just slightly before noon and finned out to the drop site at the milk jugs. It was a somewhat longer swim for Brandon, but he hung in there.

We dropped down onto a nice path of reef in approx 30 fsw. Vis was a little spotty, but approximately in the 10-15ft range. Surge was minimal at the beginning of the dive. After some minor misdirection, we regrouped and started working the back side of the reef. This patch of reef had some great structure and was full of marine life. We encountered lots of friendly fish, octopi, and lobster. Anna pointed out a cool little cave with some bugs tucked away near the entrance. After a while, we eventually started working our way toward shore, over other smaller patches of reef. The vis deteriorated and the surging action was more noticeable. We finished the dive in the sandy shallows just outside the surf line.

In summary it was a fun dive. It was nice meeting and diving with some great Scuba Board folks.

What a great time!

Teresa and I had a wonderful time at Heisler Park, once again. Thanks everyone for making it worth the drive down.

I want to thank Glycerin, Mark99, Taniwha, and John for diving with me on 3 excellent dives. (by the way, John, I know you are reading this, do a post to say hi:D )

We will see everyone at the next one.

SANDEATERS DIVE. Met up with Brian Meux who was running a tad late due to traffic. Waves were 2 to 3 feet with a long lull between sets. Bottom of the stairs were awash with the waves but there was still some sand beach beyond to the west. Entered and crossed to the sand and swam out to the right of the big rock, dropping down just short of the pinnacle off shore that peeks up. Took a heading south and then west trying to get away from the 4-6 foot surge that was hammering us in the shallows. Got beneath the surge but lost the visibility. So there is the dilemma, stay shallow and have good visibility but you cant stick around and look and anything due to about 4-6 feet of surge or go deeper, get a lot of sand in the water and poor visibility, but no or limited surge. Oh well, we had fun and saw several fish and had a good time and a pleasant dive. Only saw one small lobster (dang). Timed our exit perfectly and walked out. A great day of diving followed by a leisurely lunch at nearby Ruby’s where we both actually found parking spots right away and no wait to be seated.

Now my next dive will be Thursday night in Puget Sound, Seattle Washington. I can hardly wait for Thursday.

Date: February 12, 2006
Dive Location: Hermosa Artificial Reef and Redondo Beach Artificial Reef
Buddy(ies): Marc and Hilary
Time: 10:56, 12:32
Bottom Time: :46, :30
Max Depth: 66', 78'
Vis: 0-4', 15'+
Wave height: 2-4
Temp at depth: 54F
Comments: My last dive with Hilary for awhile. She goes home to New Mexico tomorrow, but she will not be going home empty handed. There are three lobsters who have been granted temporary residence status in New Mexico, at least until dinner time tomorrow.
As we motored around the Palos Verdes peninsula we watched the high surf pound the shoreline of most coves. The water on the West side was green and the swells were still large, so we headed up to Hermosa Beach. The water was blue and I watched Marc's anchor drop at least forty feet below the surface. We even saw a whale aproaching the boat after we got in the water. We were in for some great vis...not! We hit the sand, only to find 0-3 feet vis. Oh well, we were looking for lobsters, not photo ops. We didn't see any for the first twenty minutes, then found two legal size boys near the end of the dive. I managed to grab one and kick Hilary in the head at the same time. Multi-tasking.
Hilary's drysuit leaked again, so she sat out the next dive. Too bad. We had at least fifteen feet vis at the Redondo Beach Artificial Reef. I grabbed another bug right away, but didn't stay too long after noticing that someone closed my isolator yesterday on my doubles, leaving me with half-fills.
On the way back we looked for the Marineland Platform again. I think it got up and walked away. Still no luck.

Went out for a look at the yukon today.
Weather was gorgeous, with an impressive rolling swell coming in from the west, our exit from the mission bay channel was spectacular (actually, I'm told I am just a total landlubber and that sort of thing is normal).

The yukon has lost the bow and stern buoys, leaving just the midships line tied off to the radio tower, and with four boats including hydrodiver and Lois Anne already there, we had lots of competition for somewhere to tie off. (In fact, the Lois Anne was anchored, but more of that later.)
As we motored up to the site, the Lois anne came over the radio with a request for lifeguard assistance for two divers who had made a rapid ascent; it seems there was no real emergency but the captain was taking precautionary measures; a diver had bolted for the surface and his DM had gone with him, making two potential casualties.

Since we had a non-diving skipper, we just dropped in from a convenient spot, and made our way to the bouy for a descent to the radio mast. Vis was a variable 10 -20 ft, depending on depth with very light surge, except near the bow hatches where I got blown 20 ft by a well timed "exhalation".

We neared the bow just in time to see the Lois Anne's anchor drag over the foredeck and snag on the bow rails, pulling them up into a large vee before snapping them off; we just had time to get out of the way before the whole lot came down again, fortunately not on top of us.

A nice dive with lots of drama!

Rick, you deserve the thanks! Thanks for being a great guide and for sharing your expertise about diving with me. It was a pleasure meeting you and Teresa, and I will definitely see you at the next Wrinklez dive at Catalina.

John, thanks for being my dive buddy. I had a lot of fun, even though I got lazy and went to sleep on the grass.

For those of you who have never made a Wrinklez dive with these fine people, this was my first one, and I must say that everybody was very friendly. They made me feel welcome, and I made some good friends. (Hope I don't leave anybody out here) Todd, Dave, and Rene the jet fixers, AnneMarie and her husband, Jackie, Anna, Ted tech dude, can't forget Tevis, Christian, and everybody whose name I forgot :banghead: I had a good time. Thanks to all of you! :D

Cheers,
Doug

Oh, by the way, I lost a hood somewhere in the BBQ area of the Laguna Beach Wrinklez dive. If anyone ended up with an extra hood, let me know, OK?

Cheers,
Doug

Rick,

I had a great time at my first Wrinkles dive with you, Doug, Mark and Josh. Thanks for being our periscope man as we made our beach head assault on the rocks. I look forward to more Wrinkles dives with you guys in the future.
