Joewr, you forgot the beautiful Piney Woods of East Texas. They're not like any other part of Texas, and somewhat like the deep south. The trees are so tall you can hardly see the sky, and fall brings its own wonderful smell to the air from the many hardwood forests interspersed amongst the pines. East Texas is full of historic homes turned into bed and breakfasts. Jefferson has it's history of riverboat travel before the great raft clogged up the Red River and created Caddo Lake. It's the largest totally natural lake in the area and made up of river systems and bayous. It has huge Cypress trees with Spanish moss, bayous, alligators, nutria, beaver, The Great Blue Heron and other water birds, Pilated Woodpeckers, eagles, and many other interesting creatures. You'll find good old Southern Hospitality here, too. Ask Scubatexastony, too. He'll agree with me. If you haven't seen this part of the state, you're missing something special. And, by the way, I'm proud to be a native Texan from Marshall, Texas.

and....Iguana Don...

it's "American by birth, and Texan by the Grace of God"

"before the great raft"

I meant to say...after the great raft clogged up the Red, and before it was removed from above Shreveport. (Shreveport was upset that Jefferson was getting all of their riverboat commerce) ...I made a mistake because I was tired from driving back from the Halloween Dive in Austin. Forgive me please.

Natasha, I am late getting in on this party, but if you really want to experience Texas, you will have a great opportunity about six months after you get here (assuming you get here next June-July). Every February, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is held here in Houston and it is one big party for an entire month. There is a huge carnival in the parking lot and each night, after the rodeo, top-name performers in country music perform in the 'dome. In 2002, the rodeo will be making it's first run in Reliant Stadium and the new Exposition Hall and George Strait will be the opening night performer. There is a whole lot more but it would take me awhile.

Natasha;

I've had the joy of visiting Texas on a number of occassions. I love the state, love the food, and love the people. Friendly, passionate (Austin girls in Sun Dresses - the mind wobbles), right neighbourly!

I'm a proud Canuck born and bred, but the lone star state will always have a wee piece of my heart.

I'd dive in muck, mud, and cattle poo; if coming up I'd get a good'ol Texas BBQ. Heck, who am I kidding: I just want to be the first honorary member of the Swamp Divers.

(Loved them so much, I wrote the song)

Mmmmmmmm. Nothing like the food in Texas, eh? Sounds wonderful, OD.
But one little thing ..I'm hoping to be the 1st Honorary Member! After all is my thread! LoL

Since you mentioned it Mitch....I'm proud to say our company is building the new stadium!!!

And a Lyle puts it Natasha, that's right, you're not from Texas, but Texas wants you any ways!

:jester: tony.... from the seed to the tree, All Texan, welcome, and come on in this house!

Mitch,
The rodeo sounds like a blast. I'll be going through Houston, on the way to Cozumel, in March. So I'll miss it this time. But I'll be there next Feb, with my white cowgirl boots and hat on! I saw George Strait, this summer when he was here is Chicago. Great concert. He was with Alan Jackson. Last year I saw Hank Williams Jr. with Charlie Daniels. I'm trying to learn country. :)
And Tony, thank you for the kind words. Does this mean Texas will adopt me? American by birth, Texan by adoption?
:sunny:

Natasha, I saw that same George Strait show in San Antonio (Houston was not on the tour this year). Yes, it was great! This year, the Houston rodeo will have the Dixie Chicks opening up on February 12 and George Strait closing it down on March 3. I have also seen it on other sites that Clay Walker and Lee Ann Womack will perform on other dates. I am on one of the rodeo committees and I was told that this year's rodeo, the last in the Astrodome, will have a ton of huge acts.

As for whether Texas will adopt you, you will have to ask your hubby about that (he is from Texas, right?). Myself, I believe you will fit in just fine here and you do not have to learn country to live here but it does not hurt. :)

Tony, I drive by that stadium site every day and it is looking really good. They have completed the structure, now they are working on the fine details. It will be a really nice building.

I've got 3 words for you & your hubby. Mi Cocina Swirls! When y'all head on over; promise me you & hubby will go to a Mi Cocina Mexican Rest. & have some of the salsa and drink a swirl! Ooooooooooooh, girl! They'll bite ya back! Hurry on over, will ya?!

We'll have to try that place. Hey it looks like you live in Dallas. Have you gone to the TexasMike's birthday thread yet? I hope you'll go to the party. We can finally party/and talk scuba together if you do!

fond memories of my last visit to Texas. Texans are warm and friendly and try their upmost best to make you feel at home.......

The last time I was there (around 95 or 96) , a bunch of canucks down there on a conference at the US thanksgiving. We were all so lonely for Canada land they some how arranged for the first snowfall in San Antonio in over ten years.

We froze our a**** off. Brought shorts,t's and light clothing......hmmmppfff. The entertainment was great though, nothing like watching inexperienced winter drivers with summer slicks on their cars trying to drive on frozen roads.

I did (all kidding aside) enjoy the hospitatlity, the TexMex food, the Alamo was very intriging, and of course the best part was having Freddy Fender entertaining us one night. (seriously)

Butch :Peace:
