PADI materials are pretty and designed to be text books but the content sucks. They know lots about designing pretty books, just not much about diving. LOL

That's a bit of a surprise. I've been hearing that they're quite good. What is it about the content that doesn't measure up?

PerroneFord, I don't know when you took your IANTD classes but they haven't used navy tables for a long time. They were using Buhlmann for a long time (that's what's in all the texts) and now I think they even use RGBM or VPM (not sure which).

The 2004 verion of the IANTD tables are still Buhlmann. I've heard that they've adopted VPM but to the best of my knowledge it hasn't found its way into the materials yet.

Mike,

Apparently there has been some difficulty in getting current material shipped to IANTD instructors, so we did not have the newest materials. The tables we actually USED were Buhlmann tables, but the stuff in the materials was a mix of Buhlmann and Navy. Actually come to think of it, I think you're right. The IANTD was Buhlmann, but we had Navy in one of the texts we used.

Talking about the tech materials now.
My favorite is what they have to say about shooting a bag. They tell you to have a buddy hold onto you or to grab something with your legs while you blow up the bag. It also strikes me how little phisiology or even decompression theory is discussed. I definately think those subjects are appropriate at that level of diving. It's been a while since I looked at it but I'm sure I could come up with more.

Early on, I think I even tried to defend it a couple of times and got my butt kicked. LOL

Well....That's pretty bad....I'm glad to learn from your experience.... LOL... I'd hate to be laughed at for this if you can do it first....LOL.

I guess you could say that it's good that they say anything at all (no matter how absurd) about how to shoot a bag. As far as I can recall, the IANTD materials don't even mention it.....

Good point. The IANTD tech encyclopedia has some stuff on techneque as far different kicks and stuff but they don't go over how to do each and ever skill in the text.
