Really the only reason I own my tanks is the convenience factor as it isn't really cost effective to own as I can rent a full tank for basically $2 more than the price of an air or nitrox fill. It also costs me more in gas to go to the LDS than the actual fill.

My motivation for owning a tank was to travel and dive in areas where there are no dive shops. The cost of renting a tank for 7 days while you are only diving 1 day is ....

Is it just the air or do you get nitrox from them in the same deal?

Banked EAN 32 and air are interchangeable / same price at this LDS

I like to purchase and own all of my "tools", which gives me peace of mind knowing what condition they are in all the time, even if its "just" a tank, as opposed to a regulator for example.

Why not extend this to all of your dive gear? Just pay for it all, have the shop keep it and maintain it for you, and rent it out when you're not using it. I'm of course being sarcastic here. My point is, that it's a very clever way for the shop in question to get you to finance their tank fleet for them.

I like to dive my x7-100's, what happens when your tank is rented out? Do they give you Joe Schmoes alu 80? Like others have said yes it could be a good deal but the devil is in the details. I also like to be able to dive at a moments notice not when the dive shop is open.
