Martin Lester's kites are fantastic. The design that really propelled him to international fame was his "legs" kite. As the story goes, a journalist in Britain humorously made a joke about Lester and his legs kite, and the kitemaker decided to try and make one. His sculptural kites have been great sellers and flyers ever since.

Seriously, though, with how easy it can be to lose a diver on the surface in the troughs of the waves, a kite could be very useful. A parafoil kite with a couple of hundred feet of line, would easily reach heights that a boat could see from considerable distance. Add a reflective mylar ribbon tail, and you've got a great attention-getter.

Years ago before small lift bags were available a garbage bag inflated inside a mesh catch bag made a improvised lift bag.

I always bring a large ziplock with me in my catch bag. I sometimes stow my camera inside so it does not get scratched up.

I use it on the hike back to the car to pick-up trash near the water or on the trail.

While I agree that taking plastic bags scuba diving is stupid, I would think "divers" are less than a fraction of the "plastic bag in the oceans" problem. I would think focusing awareness of this problem elsewhere would be more benificial.

Now we're going to start an argument over how many mylar balloons you can fill with a spare air. A 19 cubic foot pony will fill many more balloons than a little spare air so it is much safer to use.

Yeah, a garbage bag is not a good idea. If an individual decides to take it with them, that is one thing. But to go around suggesting that others take them is just negligent.
