$66,000!? Chicago is normally not that expensive.

Okay maybe it wasn't $66,000, but it was an expensive weekend.

ok, so given the current trend of this discussion are new, warm water only divers welcome? We would like to venture into the quarries and great lakes (if we can do it wet), but have not had opportunity yet. And I will admit for myself (can't speak for DH) but I'm a bit nervous about anything cold and dark... :( But I really do want to give it a try.

Amy, Sure new divers are welcome to attend! As are wet suit divers (being one myself).

A M&G is an excellent opportunity to meet some of the folks here on Scubaboard. Just don't be expecting warm water around here in April!

For the spring M&G, I am in favor of Ohio quarries for a few reasons. It tends to be more central to most of our membership and involves less travel time. It tends to be more open to divers of all levels to meet and plan wreck driving later in the season. And, most captains don't pull the shrink wrap off of their boats until late April to mid May due to the tempermental nature of our lakes this time of year. Booking a charter this time of year simply is not very feasible (at least in Lake Huron).

Once the charters start running, we will have divers booking those and fewer divers for our big M&G in the spring. The informal refresher courses and classes are a big function of M&G and that requires some of the dive pros/techies/experienced divers who will be on boats when they start to run. Ask many of our members where they made their initial contacts with dive buddies and I would wager that over half would say M&G.

As to later wreck diving plans, the more people that want to make them, the merrier! We definitely need that activity as well. I have done a couple myself, but I do get busy (as some people here have observed) and finances for paying deposits on charters are getting tight in my case.

The point is that many of us dive both the quarries and the wrecks. I prefer the wrecks myself :) . But, I will do the quarry time as well in preparation for wrecks.

Note: Given a choice between Munising or Toby, I would take Toby!

Come out and join us! I'll have the tent and Ken brings heat so if it's not really windy we have a warm place for wetsuit divers to change and warm up. There's lots of wonderful hot food to warm you up on the inside as well!

While the water is cold we can show you a few tricks that will actually help you enjoy diving in it. The shallow part of the quarry (if we do Gilboa) isn't dark it's just green, a very pretty bright green.

Meet-n-greet is the place to get your first quarry experience. I took some students last year and they couldn't believe how friendly everyone was and how much fun they had. I had a couple guys in wetsuits getting their OW certification who were having so much fun they opted to stay in the water for their SIT and do the snorkel dives then get right back in for their second dive. A wetsuit that fits well is the key to an enjoyable cold water dive if you don't have a drysuit.

okey dokey... so... this is camping or just a one day thing? we have tents... what is the normal temps?? Is this for families (ie: kids or do we need to beg grandma to take them for the weekend??). I think it sounds great.

Gezz I feel asleep on this one. I am in for all the diving I can do this year. Last years diving sucked for me but the money was good. Gotta make up for it this year...and spend part of that money.

If all goes right I will have a power inverter soon so we can pretty much run what ever our hearts desire as long as we have a vehicle.

Most people camp, some stay in local motels. It is a weekend thing. Some folks arrive Fri afternoon, others on Sat and some just on Sun. Some stay the whole weekend, some come and go. It really varies.

Last year the temps were in the 60s during the day and 40s at night, but it can really vary that time of year. Water temps were around 50 on the surface down to 42 at 60'.

You gotta make it if you can Wally. It's alot of fun. I'm hoping to make it, but it all depends upon what weekend we pick.

While you can bring the kids you have to pay something like $8 each per day for them to be there, whatever the non-diver price is at the quarry. Might get a little on the expensive side and there really isn't a whole lot for them to do. Best bet is probably grandma's.

Could we please get this thread pinned so that we don't lose it. A title modification to make it more obvious that it involves our Meet and Greet would be a nice touch as well :) .

Thanks a bunch! :D
