Tried both... and came to the conclusion based upon the type of diving I did that Scuba Pro Jet fins with XS Scuba Spring Straps were my best fins, hands down.

I had a pair of Apollo Bio Fins... eh... with spring straps... eh eh

Have a pair of full foot Mares Volo Race for tropical diving and I like them too...

And 2 pair of Scuba Pro Jets... L and XL... wetsuit and drysuit... both with XS Scuba Spring Straps...

My diving is primarily quarry, dry suit, great lakes and technical diving... the Scuba Pro Jets are ideal....

what the &^ll is a full fin??

are you talking about split fins vs. paddle fins
or are you talking about full foot fins vs. open heel

or is there a new fin that I have never heard of

The Jets worked great for me... However, they worked even better when I slit them up the middle...

#1. They say split fins are better than paddle fins.

#2. Study after study shows that split fins are better than paddle fins.

You need to reread the studies, the only peer reviewed scientific studies that I have read actually state the the "Best Fin" tested have been

1) Jets
2) Apollo Bio-Fins with the split taped shut
3) Mares Attack
4) Apollo Bio-Fins

and for those of you that know me, this recent (2003) study did not include ForceFins. But a study completed some 10 years prior showed that they effeciency of ForceFins exceeded that of the Jets, unforetunatly that test was paid for by the Navy and they classified the data so its not available for everyone to read. They did this because it "would provide significant advantage" in the retail market.

Got both. Scuba pro twin jet split and seadiver Z . For me it's a matter of weight. The split fins weigh twice as much as my blades. Sooo, if I'm off to some place which puts me on mini planes with teeney weight limits (one bag 50 lbs and a 12 lb. carryon) then it's the blades. If I'm on regular airlines I go with the split fins. Both work fine but in hevy current (Fiji etc.) I prefer the split fins.

My question would be this. How can you really do a "scientific" study on fin use. At best you have a bunch of people who put on some fins, swim around in perhaps various conditions, and then give their opinions on which ones they like the best. And we all know what they (there is that group of people again) say about opinions. I might also add that just because it was the Navy that did a "study", it doesn't make their conclusions any more significant or hold any more weight than when a group of divers do it through Scubalab. It's the same thing, people swimming around giving their opinions.

It is called physics! Every action has an equal and opposite reaction! It is also called evolution, no fish that is healthy has split fins, but when they are sick and ready to be eaten their fins split! Draw your own conclusions! One more little clue free divers use what?

I'll be in Cayman Brac May 18th - 25th and will be diving for the first time in a long time some new paddle fins instead of my usual split fins. And to top it off, they will be full foot paddle fins. They are the Mares Avanti Superchannel Full Foot fins that got such a good review from Scubalab. Or maybe it was a scientific study they did. It will be interesting to see how I will like them.
