i asked if could be possible to do part of off gazing while exploring the upper part .
The upper deck is 65 ft (20M). Not sure how how long you are at your bottom depth, but it's not a significant off gazing at 65ft. Also re-check with your charter since lately "mixed tech & rec" same trips are being frowned up unless they have dozens of trips with you & your buddy in the last 6 months.

Ok thanks ! So for you deco dive ain't really a good plan ? But i agree i dont want to do deco hanging on the Line , that's why i asked if could be possible to do part of off gazing while exploring the upper part .

With 78 and 86min dive with no deco it was some big Time on upper part i guess? I will ask horizons but i think if i'm doing double dip dive i will ask for my own guide otherwise i don't think we could do such a long dive if with more less Advanced divers, Big SAC or anything else
Last time i asked them about what kind of profile they did they told me they go up to stay in no deco zone and when it's not possible anymore or 1000 psi , dive is over
78 min was 2 dives in the AM dive window, 86 min was 2 dives in the PM dive window. I gave the times to compare to what you might get with a single decompression dive.

You're correct. My son and I dived as an independent buddy pair. I had 20 dives, many solo, on the Spiegel Grove before this trip and knew it reasonably well. We both have good gas consumption. The top of the SG is at about 60+ ft, the main deck is about 90 ft.

Enjoy your dives on the Spiegel Grove and the Vandenberg

Hi @sharko108

My friend @Divin'Papaw did three double dips on the Spiegel Grove in June with Horizon Divers and there were also tech divers on the trips. He should be able to comment about Horizon double dip regulations and relative dive time for a double dip vs. a single decompression dive.

Yes i'm not sure if around 65ft with 40-50% i will erase a lot of mandatory stop but that was the idea instead of doing 1h dive with maybe 20min deco on the Line 😅
Sorry what do you mean by "mixed tec and rec in same trip"

Oh makes more sense now ok, so yes kinda what i thought , around 2x35min each dive

Perfect, curious to know then thanks 😊

@RyanT & @Johnoly have covered the topic well. Horizon allows 1 tech or 2 rec dives. They allow solo with a solo cert but not otherwise. They do not allow solo tech unless they know you well, so you’ll need a buddy or guide to do tech dives.

Given the depth & typically strong current, deco on the wreck is not really manageable. You are far more likely doing your deco on the line in a pretty stiff current. The mooring balls attach to the wreck at around 65’ or so. Now the viz is typically pretty good (but not always) allowing you plenty to see while on deco.

My double-dip rec dives on the Spiegel were all 40-45 min runtime with about 35 min on the wreck to a depth of 100-105’ using EAN30.

A few years back I did two double-dip rec trips with Horizon to the Spiegel Grove. We did not get bored -- great dive site. Dives were about 35-40 minutes total time (including ascent and safety stop). Just single AL80s and 30%. The deepest we went was 107 feet.

A single technical dive on the SG when others are doing double dip rec dives is awfully nice. Lazy gear up while the masses rush off. Back on board a quiet boat. Knowledgeable guide to show me the super cool spots. No one stirring up vis or in my way. The stiff current was not an issue -- did my deco using a dog leash as a Jon Line (very relaxing) while a 5 ft snaggle-tooth barracuda kept me company. Yeah, if tech is an option, that'd be my answer.

Thanks for the feedback 😊 and do you remember what was your dive plan (run/bottom/deco time) please?
So deco was in the blue, off the Wreck but still nice i guess?

I'll probably have to take a tec guide. Tha'ts also why i wanted to be sure between tec or rec as Tec dive is $100 vs 40$ + all other costs of deco tank etc..
Well 45min /dive is ok 😊

Thx ! So yes each Time is around 35-45min total dive for a dive
I will see but it seems that with multi level planning i could actually go way more than 60min run time maybe 75-80 😊

I did several runs with Horizon right after my 50m tech certification, so plans were pretty cautious. Runtimes varied with depth, but deco was consistently at 20 mins on O2. On one dive, I did enjoy checking out the massive cargo hold (?) at 135 ft for about 5 mins, and that dive had about 45 mins on the wreck itself. We had planned for 60 mins on the wreck that time, but I got emotional at the Snoopy tiles and wanted to end on that note.

Basically, going tech realistically opens up the deeper sections, gives redundancy in the extended swim through / overhead sections, and means you don't have to rush. You can finish up at similar areas as the rec divers (70-90 ft) without the faff of boarding, waiting an hour, and re-descending. The down side, obviously, is the deco time on the line, but even as a rec diver, I'd spend at least 10 mins at the two safety stops. There's stuff to see, however, and no need to talk to anyone (which is actually a plus for me 😂).
