Rick Inman:
The guy really wants it and can't figure out why I'd trade a camping trailer for a flash light. :eyebrow:

Then there's the look on your wife's face when you tell her....

"You spent HOW!!! much on a Flashlight?" :11:

I hear you, Rick -- I sold a saddle to finance this acquisition, and all my riding friends think I have gone plumb nuts.

I think this thread may have been a bad idea, though. Now I'm getting nervous that if I buy a 10WHID, I'm going to wish it had been a 21W . . . ach, the decisions!

Just get the 21W now. You're definitely gonna want it later.

I'd put Barry's brightstar at the top of the list.

Rick Inman:
Ohh...I'm liking this thread. The timing is perfect.

In the next hour, a guy is coming to show his wife my old beat up camping trailer that he wants to buy from me. If she says yes, he'll give me the cash.

I'm asking exactly $1200.00 firm - the exact cost of a Salvo 21w including fast shipping. :D

Salvo is using a diferent bulb that is very durable. I watched as one lightwas bounced off a table intentionally and then turned on and it worked. He has a good product there. get the 21 watt HID

$1200 for a light? OMG! And I thought horses were expensive (Hell, I KNOW horses are expensive).

Oh, yes, the saddle she just sold? I gave it to her for a birthday present a couple of years ago. And it's being traded in for a light?

(mutter, mutter, mutter -- gotta go find a housing, gotta go find the right camera, gotta go get a couple of 95's -- $1200 for a light?????)

If you REALLY love her you'll surprise her with one. :07:

It's cheaper than the route I took ... first, buy the Halcyon 18W. Then, after flooding the darn thing, send it off to Sandroff for repair and retrofits. Then, after dropping it and breaking the bulb, send it off to Salvo for a 21W upgrade.

Total cost (so far) ... about $2150 ...

That Terkel light y'all were so impressed with is my "backup light" ...

Bob3:
What's the matter, are you afraid of the dark? :D

Not really ... I just like having the best available tools for the job.

Bob3:
I'm waiting on a decent LED system, tiny bulletproof size w/long long burn time, using standard batteries.

LED lights are great for clear water environments ... but in typical Puget Sound conditions they don't penetrate very far. You have to shine your light within a couple feet of the subject to even see the beam. And for signaling, they're totally useless.
Bob3:
For limited viz I prefer more of a flood than a spot.
Around here all a flood light will do is blind you with backscatter. Ever drive in a snow storm with your high beams on?

I won't argue that the 21's aren't brighter than the 10's, but I'm fairly satisfied with "only" my 10W HID. :)

When we're deep (say 50' or deeper), I notice the 21's are brighter, but the 10 lets me see stuff just as well.

The place where I really notice the difference though is in ths shallower depths during the day, say around 30 feet. There my light starts to get washed out, while the 21's still seem to really light up stuff.

When we get back up to the 15 foot range, both the 21's and 10's seem to get totally washed out by the sunlight.

At night, both are spectacular at any depth. :)

I guess I'm trying to say, all things equal, the 21's are better, but it's like comparing a $150,000 exotic sports car and a $250,000 exoctic sports car. Both are awesome, and anyone would be tickled pink to drive one. It just boils down to how important that extra $100,000 is when it comes time to buy one. :crafty:
