Rick Inman:
Ohh...I'm liking this thread. The timing is perfect.

In the next hour, a guy is coming to show his wife my old beat up camping trailer that he wants to buy from me. If she says yes, he'll give me the cash.

I'm asking exactly $1200.00 firm - the exact cost of a Salvo 21w including fast shipping. :D

The guy really wants it and can't figure out why I'd trade a camping trailer for a flash light. :eyebrow:

SOLD!!
Got the cash in hand :). Tomorrow, first thing I'm ordering the 21w Salvo! :D

LOL...I sold a pool table to help pay for an X-Scooter extra long hull

I got a Dive Rite 21W HID canister light!

Does the trick for me everytime I turn it on! Boing-g-g-g-g-g-g!!!

For night and low-vis diving, nothing like a good light cannon.

TSandM:
Fairly new diver here, in the Puget Sound area, which means lots of marginal viz and overcast days. I had to buy a light, of course, to do the night dive of my AOW class, and bought a relatively inexpensive LED light. Then I went diving with NWGratefulDiver and discovered canister lights, and real ILLUMINATION. I now have a case of classic toy lust.

But I want to know what the downsides of these lights are -- what don't I know about them that I'm going to regret not knowing after I have spent an obscene amount of money acquiring one? Fragile? High maintenance? Battery cost? Propensity to leak? What do I need to know to make an informed decision, instead of succumbing to my impulses?

BTW, before somebody says, "Do a search," I have read reams of posts about dive lights, and have a shrewd idea about one brand versus another and that sort of thing . . . but the basic info about hand-held versus canister lights just didn't seem to be there.

I bought a new Dive Rite 21 watt canister light in May. It failed in June. I sent it back, they kept it a month and returned it, it would not come on, I sent it back again a month ago, still haven't gotten it back. Be warned. I am a fan of Dive Rite equipment but would not suggest to anyone that they buy the 21w canister light. When I get the repaired light back it will be on ebay cheap. If you are still interested, watch for it!

Well, Walter, you failed to convince me :)

I placed an order yesterday for a Nite Rider 10W HID with a 6 degree dispersion head. I can't wait for it to get here!

Well, if I come visit you in Florida, I'll bring the little LED light :)

This one isn't for night diving -- it's for punching through Puget Sound murk!

I just ordered the Sea Elite 10W. I was really considering the Salvo 21W, but for now I went with the price difference.

Walter:
Because they are too big and too bright.
Walter, you really should come visit Puget Sound ... right now the plankton blooms are so thick that even day dives are in the dark ... :11:
