I posted this question in the snorkel poll but figured I would get a better response with its own thread....

I was told by my Rescue instructor that you may have a problem with collecting on insurance if you don't carry one. His words were and I quote “insurance requires that you always have a snorkel on your person when diving but does not specify were on your person it must be"

No I don't think the snorkel police are watching but I deal with detailed reports everyday and in a diving accident with an unconscious diver statements would be taken from witnesses / fellow divers , boat crew etc.. and I would say equipment would be one of the questions…

Anybody ever heard of this?

I call BS!

Could be...don’t know that’s why the question was poised.
And maybe I should clarify I personally don't think any of the major companies won't pay for medical treatment, I am more interested with a diving accident that a loss of life occurred and the deceased had diving insurance with life insurance attached...

perhaps he meant that during training a snorkel is a peice of required gear..if there is no snorkel and an incident occurs during training the insurance co. he has might try to weasel out of their liability.where are you doing this course?may be someone I know.

Well, I'm a cave diver and a snorkle is not part of our gear, so now what?

Course was done at Dutch Springs last August. I see your in Westchester if you have done checkouts at DS he has a trailer their all summer, each year.

He may have been referring to his liability insurance. It's possible that he wouldn't be covered if his class wasn't doing what it was supposed to, according to his cert agency.

I know that my DAN insurance couldn't care less if I had a snorkel.

we do 99% of training dive in salt water,LI sound on boats..I find I have more control taking 2 students at a time to do skills than a group to a platform.Less drive time and you get to go home with lobsters often enough..more stuff to see in LI sound too..

Diving in Orange county the snorkel is required by Law. If caught diving without it you can count on a hefty fine.

Outside of following the law I supose that insurance companies may take a stance on non-use. I think that if you read your policy it should state in the policy what their requirment is.

Do you have a civil code for this law? I find it hard to believe there is a law stating a diver must use a snorkle.

Have I dove Orange county and inadvertantly broke the law?
