i bought a snorkel since I thought we'll be using it for my open water certification, turns out, I never used my brand new XS Scuba snorkel on any dives that I had. What a waste. Would just probably lend it to my non-diving friends on beach getaways :).

I wore snorkels during my pool sessions. During my check-out sea dive, it gave me a freak out while doing the mask removal/clearing skills, the extra weight made it harder for me to return the mask on. Also, for some reasons, whenever I reached out for the BCD inflator/deplator button, it's always the snorkel mouthpiece I touched. Additional freak out/panic moments. I ditched wearing it the second dive during check-out and felt better. If at all required, I wouldn't mind bringing one as long as it's attached somewhere else other than my head.

Stopped using my snorkel for boat dives after a few months of diving.
Now I only use my snorkel for shore dives and I hate it (drag and entanglement issues.)
It doesn't help that it's flexible and is forever getting in my face

We ditched our snorkels when we started diving in Bonaire. However we soon realized that it is a good thing to have when boat diving in unfamiliar waters where it is possible to be either floating and waiting for the boat in water that might be somewhat choppy or where you may have a bit of a surface swim.

So it is not entirely worthless, but depends on where you are diving. Also we dive leaders need to set a good example and have it in place when teaching students or leading them on open water dives or practice dives.

i don't use it, it stays in the dive bag. it just makes mask clearing difficult. besides, we do "señorito" diving in the philippines...local dive boats (outriggers) usually follow our bubbles. when we surface it's not more than a few minutes away from us :D

Why don't they make a forum in this board called "Dead Horses" or maybe "Trainwrecks"

This area could be reserved for threads like:

BP vs. Jacket
Snorkel or no snorkel
Long hose debates
Split fins vs. jet fins vs. force fins
DIR or non-DIR
Inspiration vs. "insert your CCR here"
Solo diving

I think that pretty much covers most of them

Spoon,
Have you considered a course in punctuation? Maybe the use of the shift key?
I could elevate you to the position of 'close to human' and maybe people would think your view was valid.

A snorkel can save your precious air when shore diving or any diving where you are swimming on the surface for extended periods to enter, and especially exit, the water. I use my snorkel when diving these situations in the ocean but not when diving my favorite local lake where surface time in the water is minimal.

I haven't included a snorkel in my dive rig since after I recieved my OW certification. I figured, if I am at the surface I breath fresh air, otherwise I'm down below exploring. If I need to take a quick look from above to find the reef, I just hold my breath for few moments. Besides, now that I have a steel hp 100, I have plenty reserve.
