It wasn't just spear fishermen.

They ate what was shot.

Thinning the population is good for the overall ecology of the site.

Don't equate the effective range of a spear with that of a gun. You aren't going to shoot 1# sunfish with your 60" Riffe.

You're soooo right. (enjoy!) Usually, I'm out there in April, but it doesn't look like our schedule will allow that this year, so have to settle for the first weekend in May. I expect all of the above to show, btw. And, ahem, some of you TheDarkerAndColderTheBetter divers better show up too!

The City Engineer said it was a Hoax but I guess folks didn't believe him.

I'm convinced the sunfish have been watching the Planet Earth series and are all hyped up and pretending to be their piranha brothers. I really don't want to feed the little buggers, especially any more ear parts.
 
Personally I think folks make to big a deal out of those little sunfish at CSSP. I have had blood drawn on the ear out there...no big deal. As to new divers and students,,,the instructors that I know warn the students and sugg. a hood/beanie or mask strap over the ears. Its just part of diving in a lake with fish!
