I've used DEET for years and it works. I don't like the smell, oily residue or the fact that it dissolves plastic. A friend of mine turned me on to a repellant put out by Repel. Repel puts out various percentages of DEET but they also put out a lemon-eucalyptus.
My patio gets a lot of no-see-ums and a few mosquitos at sunset. The no-see-ums attack my ankles. I need to use a repellant when I'm out there in the summer. I tried the lemon-eucalyptus Repel and not one bite. It works!
It's hard to find locally, I ordered it online.
