Hello all! I live in Manchester and recently finished my certification. Singing Beach is only about 1/8th of a mile from where I live and would be super convenient for me. I've never seen anyone diving at Singing Beach and was wondering if there is any reason why? I know that the locals to Singing Beach aren't exactly the friendliest to outsiders. (read that as wealthy snobs...lol)

Thanks,

Kristopher

Congrats. on your certification!

Yes. Manchester has those uber-rich, snobby folks who deceptively mark their public access streets as private. Not so nice. That's why I like Gloucester. Hard working folks, little pretense.

Aside from my social perspectives - I walk my dog there on occasion and noticed that it doesn't seem to be an ideal place to dive as there are waves a plenty, and no indication that there is a reef, or some type of rock barrier / sand bar which might make for some calmer water and substrate for living critters. In short - all I see is nice sand, nice pebbles and the imaginary "singing" sound it's supposed to make as the sand grinds away.

I could imagine a snorkeling dive sometime before the summer crowds come in to see what lurks beyond the surf line? It'd be fun to snorkel around some of the fenced-off mansions that are on the periphery of the beach. Some looked shallow, but some had some big rocks here and there. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if some old, wrinkled dowager called the cops.

I've attached a picture of my dog as he is about to get arrested!

Mr X,

Thank you for the reply. Now that you mention it, all the thing you say make sense. The waves at singing beach do seem a little extreme for a safe entry. There are some fair sized boulders a little ways out. I wonder if anything lives out there? Might be worth checking out when it gets a little warmer. My wife and I walk her families dog there sometimes. One of my favorite experiences with him was when he got away from me while I was walking him off leash. He scooted up the rocks and behind a chain link fence one of the wealthier owners had installed. I caught up to him just in time to see him lifting his leg on the "no trespassing" sign. I was very proud of him!

I don't know if you'd be at all interested in diving with a newby, but I'm looking for a dive buddy for when it gets a little warmer and would love to find someone who knows the local area.

Knfmn,

You might want to check with Cape Ann Divers in Gloucester. They run guided dives during the dive season. You may very well meet potential dive buddies there. BTW, is your wife a diver too?

Good pup! Smart pup!

B. Muntasser's suggestion is a very good one. Cape Ann Divers (when they open back up) have services, regulars who dive Cape Ann and maps of ideal dive sites around the North Shore. I'd be happy to check out new places come late summer too. I'd also check previous threads here as SB has a fair number of very supportive divers who regularly meet up and go diving...even during the dead (brrrrrh) of winter. Me, I dove February as few years ago on a CCR, with a drysuit and I was crying like a little girl...whereas some of tougher guys were coming out of the water as if it were nuthin.' :shocked2:

Cheers and welcome to SB NE !

Burhan...I think I met you years ago somewhere in California? UC Davis/UC Santa Cruz/UC Berkeley?

Cheers,

X

You sound familiar but I have never been to any of the UC's you mention. All of my schooling was in the North East (WPI in Worcester as undergrad and Polytechnic U. in NY for grad. school). You can PM me if you want. Were/are you a NAUI instructor?

:shocked2: what's wrong with diving in the middle of the winter?

but I did pass on diving this morning and was drinking coffee while my regular buddies froze :D

I second the advice to stop by Cape Ann Divers, I often swing by the shop on my way to the dive site as they often have up to date information on the sites. They also have an online version of their dive site map handout thingy here

I've got a reminder set in my calendar to go visit cape Ann divers the day they reopen. Seems like a well liked shop. Are they an SSI or NAUI shop? I was having a hard time figuring it out from their website. Thanks for all the tips.

they are a NAUI shop, if you're looking for a SSI shop I think the closest one is United Divers in Somerville

I'm not really looking for NAUI or SSI...lol. I got my cert through PADI. I was just curious. BTW, I got my prescription mask through United Divers and they were fantastic. Seemed like a great bunch of people. I wish they were more convenient, as I'd love to do more business with them.
