Other then that you can check kalypso (prob spelt wrong) dive shop in north providence. Decent prices large selection specializes in kayak diving.

Kalypso (if its the same one) is now located off Rt 44 in Smithfield RI. A good little shop with a bunch of experienced/knowledgeable employees/divers.

Also as mentioned previously, OSS in Jamestown is a popular shop and I havent had any problems there. Great for those fun dives in the summer!

Odyssey in Rehoboth MA is a really nice shop w/ experience and friendly atmosphere. Probably best for prices and selection I've seen as well.

I dont have experience with the others....but I have yet to go in a dive shop I didnt like!;)

Is OSS still in business? The word on the street is that the owner is in financial difficulties, and after his much publicized legal woes, I was wondering if the shop was still there.:06:

Why:06: ?

Just wondering if the shop is open. It's a long way to drive if they are not. Not passing any judgements, just a simple question. As a person managing a business myself, one never wants, or likes to see anyone close up shop. But, unfortunately it does happen.

I'm sure that I'm not the only person wondering.

Dennis the shop is still going strong.

anyone have a preferred choice of shop in RI for prices/info/selection?
I would highly recommend Ocean State Scuba in Jamestown. They will make you feel
right at home. They have fun shore dives, Charters and even a pool on the premises.

Agreed. I think it is a pretty unavoidable question. Whatever you personally think about the case, there is no denying that Dave is in a big heap of trouble. Just about everyone I know that has gone to that shop has been wondering what will happen to it.

I was at the shop for a fill last week and for the moment they seem to be "business as usual", at least on the surface. As for the long term future, your guess is as good as mine, but if there is an appeal I suspect it could be a long time before anything actually happens.

Gald to hear it John. The only dealing that I ever had with OSS was that I bought a kayak paddle from them about 7 years ago. I think it was before they had the pool. I recall that it was a nice, kinda smallish shop at the time, and the guy - I don't think it was the owner - that helped me was in fact quite friendly.

Didn't mean to raise anyones hackles. It's just that the person asking the original question is heading here from out of state with little diving experience. It wouldn't be fun to drive out to Jamestown and find a closed shop.

Incedently, an earlier post stated that it was rumored that United Divers may have closed their Providence store. FWIW, the United Divers website only lists their Somerville store. I have not been by that shop so I cannot confirm, nor deny that "rumor".

Regards All,
Dennis
