I like my method. Buy reg, use for two years, then get a new one.

take care of it, of course.

Bill, you can get a new To-To for 300. I know, Catalina is pricey---I would have carried the toilet over on the Flyer!

I figure if the plumbedr who recently replaced the wax seal on my renter's toilet (for $500) can charge $90/hr for something that merely helps ensure sanitation, that a person who is repairing an important piece of life support equipment could as well. Fortunately the person doing my repairs is certified and only charges for parts.

Dude...you were seriously ripped-off!

I called around today to get prices on having my wifes' Apeks ATX40 set up serviced. I expected it to be kind of pricy since its not under warranty. Most places I called that serviced Apeks equipment wanted $50-60 for labor and $50-55 for parts which is about what I had anticipated. However, one place I called wanted $105 for labor. I almost fell out of my chair when they told me that. I couldn't beleive they could actuall charge almost double what others wanted for labor and still be in business. I guess they have to pay for their new building some how. Now if only Mares would ship my new Abyss before we leave for Australia I wouldn't have to worry about it.

PM me if you want to know the qualified tech.. You only need to ship it out by mail....;)

Presently I use SP Mk10/G250's exclusively. Although I do 250-350 dives a year, I only service them every other year (alternating) unless there is a problem.

Yep, that toilet "repair" took away half the cost of my future HD camcorder. Outrageous, but they hold us captive here on the island whether it is Vons grocery store or tradesmen... the price of living in "near paradise."

Bill, can't you crack that phone book and get an LA plumber? Even if you pay their ticket on the Express..... you need to get those labor costs on the table before they pull out the wrench.

when I fixed up my place over there, I did that. Just an idea. They actually loved the idea of the trip over...

I am impressed over the years how many very experienced divers, like yourself, service every other year. They usually don't voice it because its a touchy subject, with all the industry people around, but I really do not like having my reg popped open by yahoos. Sure, there are some good repair techs, but do you REALLY know who is doing the work? I am even more careful about this that even analyzing my EAN, to be honest.

I realize I might be a little paranoid about the reg service thing...I have know some of the people who do repairs and it just was never very reassuring.

Its not really a matter of picking the best people to service mine or my wife's gear. I called around to get prices to get an idea of what it was going to cost since the regs are not under warranty. If the Mares Abyss I am waiting on doesn't get here in time then they are going to be serviced by the same place that services my Scuba Pro regs and that I trust to maintain my equipment. I was just shocked that 1 place wanted nearly twice what the other half dozen places I called wanted for labor. Of course I guess that would be the price of doing business with a shop that won a design award for their new store.
