I purchased a ContourRoam and housing to use UW, but I am not coming up with a great idea for securing it. For those of you using the Contour, how are you securing it? I would like to use a clip and lanyard & split ring as I use with my camera, but there is no place to attach a split ring. I could try drilling a hole near the thumb screw hole, but that makes me uncomfortable. The other idea I had was to use a washer with a thumbscrew, although I worry that the screw could work itself loose.

Any suggestions?

I have been using a strap to strap it to my wrist, but the video is a little shaky that way.

Examples of the video using the strap can be seen here. Its not too bad, and definitely very easy. just turn on the camera before jumping in the water and point your arm at anything interesting.

The bottom of the underwater case should have a 1/4-20 screw hole for mounting the case. you can always use this for securing the camera. you can use a small threaded ring like this one:

BlackRapid FastenR-T1 for Manfrotto 200PL-14 QR Plate RFH-1E0

and a lanyard like this:

I have actually purchased a arm set to help with the shaky video and also have the same lanyard. I haven't had a chance to try it out in the water yet though. The arm set also lets you add video lights, which helps with the color as well.

hope that helps.

Thanks, Mike. You have given me some ideas. My interest is primarily photography first and recording video second, so that is what I am looking at. The lanyard you suggested is essentially what I have and am trying to use. I looked at the hand strap but want to keep my hand completely free if possible. I use the same lanyard to connect my UW camera to my BCD and hope to do the same with the Contour. Since I want to set this up to use in conjunction with my camera, I am trying to stay away from a tray setup.

I like the Black Rapid fastener (without the plate, if possible). It would work with a D-ring and lanyard, and my only concern would be it working itself loose. I imagine I could either use a lock washer, or (not sure this is a good idea) some locktite to secure it.

Thanks for sharing the tips and the footage. I am looking forward to getting out and putting the Contour to good use.

Why not use the flat surface mount from Contour? It will lock onto the UW housing and it has a ring for attaching a tether. You can also use the Flex strap attachement from Contour. The Flex strap allows you to either attach the camera to your hand or attach it to a tether.

Just got a great deal on New Contour Roam with UW case and flex strap for $199.00
Send me PM if you want to know the details.

The flex strap has a hole for threading a lanyard through so I can either strap it to my wrist or hang it from a lanyard.
Can't wait to take this underwater.!!

D'oh - I looked at that mount and missed seeing the hole (is that a double negative?) on it. Instead I bought a thumb screw with a d-ring and will use it. Either way, it looks like we are both in business!

make sure to post the videos when you are done! :)

I have just ordered a contour roam, what is the best way to take it diving?

is the advice above still valid? or are there better ways now?

I won't pretend that I know the best way to take the Contour diving, but using the thumbscrew, d-ring and coiled lanyard shown in this photo works very well for me. Clip it onto your BCD and it is there if you need it or out of the way if you don't need it.
