I just returned today from two weeks diving the southern Red Sea - BDE + St John's routes. We saw the Sea Story next to our boat many times. It's in this photo I took of the 20 or so boats that were around us at Daedelus. Absolutely horrific and I hope the remaining missing persons are rescued.

A modern boat means modern materials. Plywood and fiberglass.

Yacht was ‘hit by a wave’ in middle of night

A surviving crew member said the boat was “hit by a wave in the middle of the night, throwing the vessel on its side”.
By Monday afternoon, it had become increasingly “unlikely that the 17 missing would be rescued after 12 hours in the water,” he said.
The boat, named Sea Story, is a 144ft vessel built in 2022. It departed from Port Ghalib on Saturday and was scheduled to return to Hurghada Marina on 29 November.
A distress signal was received at 5.30am on Monday, after which contact was lost.

I’m booked next week on the ocean lovers red sea lob which looks the same as that one. 44m, 5 decks, built in 2022… I am seriously starting to think if shoul’dnt cancel…
There are hundreds and hundreds of boats in the Red Sea and most trips are totally problem free. I just had a fantastic week on the Daedalus, Elphinstone and Fury Shol route with Emperor with a dugong, two oceanic mantas, multiple spots of oceanic white tips at Daedalus and masses of dolphins at Sataya. Safety checks and fire drills were very thorough. But everybody said that this is a very windy autumn. It certainly was a lot more blowy than the two or three previous trips at the exact same time. Global warming, I.e. mankind, is highly likely to be the cause. Let’s hope the missing are clinging to each other or to a life raft and that they will be found in the coming hours.

You build a short, narrow beamed boat with 4 decks above water, meaning it has a higher center of gravity, and then put it out in rough seas this is the result.

They build these short boats with multiple decks to cut down on dockage fees while also maximizing berths so they make more money per trip. It's an inherently unsafe design.

Not only do you need trip insurance, but also a small drybag to contain your passport, phone, CC, etc. to sleep with, if you dive the Red.
And your own Smoke & CO combo alarm.
Safety checks and fire drills were very thorough.
Good to hear on your experiences. Not the case of too many reports here.
