Wow. Well, each to his or her own. I loved "Open Water". Unlike a lot of diving movies, it wasn't a testosterone driven action plot. More of a psychological study of how 2 people deal with their ultimate demise and their relationship with one another as their situation becomes increasingly grim. And I loved the fact that the people who made it were not professional movie makers. As I understand it, neither quit their day jobs during the filming or post-production. It was a very bold movie to make - what with the entire movie pretty much just being 2 people bobbing about on the open ocean. Not unlike My Dinner with Andre. I would definitely watch it again. Plus, I always enjoy seeing sharks - real ones just as much as those animatronic things like Jaws or that other movie with the killer genetically-altered Makos. The special feature on the DVD was very enjoyable as well.

v4nity:
ok, the thread about the fins jessica alba wears has turned into something on movies.. os i am kinda starting a new thread about movies..

mods, you can move this to where ever you think it is most appropriate.. i couldnt figure out where to put it..

anyways, movies with diving..

what was your favorite and why?

clearly, i am on an 'into the blue' trip.
since 99% of the bodies in that movie are hot....

Jaws... Watching Dreifuss try to spit in his mask is a classic

James Bond movie where he fights the shark... don't remember the name of the flick

20000 Leagues Under the Sea - Hardhats and all - a classic

Into the Blue... Jessica Alba's rear-end alone is worth it

The Cave... Good Movie... that gets a little weird near the end

Open Water... OK... it's not great, but how many dive movies are there?

Ghost Diver - The classic 1957 Movie was a thriller

That about does it for me

I like The Big Blue. But you have to watch the Directors' Cut

what about Men of Honor with Cuba Gooding Jr.? is that right, what an inspirational movie

I'm gonna chime in for "The Deep" as my favorite "diving" movie, although 20,000 Leagues, Jaws, and the Abyss have all made it into the DVD library (BTW There a nice Director's cut of the Abyss out on DVD with 28 added minutes)

"Into the Blue" and "The Cave" weren't that bad....just not that good. They'll get pught when they hit the cheap bin.

Open Water, well lets just say it's not a bad flick, but I would not suggest showing to someone thinking about taking up diving. All the other films are flights of fancy, Open Water is based on an acutal diving disappearance, and the situation (being left behind by an inattentive boat operator) IS in the realm of possible.

The special features on The Cave DVD are better than the movie itself. If you buy the DVD, don't bother watching the film, go straight to the interviews and such.

I don't mean to belittle the work that they did in the movie, but if you want to see underwater footage, that thing they call a plot kinda gets in the way.
