ok, the thread about the fins jessica alba wears has turned into something on movies.. os i am kinda starting a new thread about movies..

mods, you can move this to where ever you think it is most appropriate.. i couldnt figure out where to put it..

anyways, movies with diving..

what was your favorite and why?

clearly, i am on an 'into the blue' trip.
since 99% of the bodies in that movie are hot....

Life Auqatic with Steve Zissou (sp?) I thought it was one of the funniest things I've seen. Lots of dry humour, lots of stuff in the background - oh yes, you even got to see boobies!

The Abyss and The Big Blue are two of my favorite water movies. I haven't seen The Deep, but experts on the internet will say that it's much better than Into the Blue (it also happens to be the original). There are also a few videos- Blue Planet (BBC), Aliens of the Deep (IMAX film by James Cameron).

The Abyss doesn't exactly showcase recreational diving, but what I liked about it is they have tough decisions to make and they do it quickly and efficiently, which does apply to recreational diving.

There are a bunch of home movies that show people diving that are fun to watch, and they are more realistic than the Hollywood films. Although they tend to lack plot and large explosions, but that isn't really a shortcoming.

You can throw in Star Trek II- The Wrath of Khan, but that has nothing to do with water.

I totally forgot about that one. haven't watched it in far too long, time to dig it out and fire up the projector... :D

Don't forget to hire the guy that plays the piano with the movie. I liked it the movie so much, I went out and bought the regulators of the same name!

I found a bargain basement movie at Walmart called "Beneath the 12 Mile Reef". Lot's of sponge diving, fighting and a perky young blonde. It features a young Robert Wagner as the "Greek" and a host of long departed actors. Best sequence is treatment for the bends using ice. Brrrrh. X

My favorite dive movie? Jaws II. Why? Because after seeing the first Jaws in 1975, I stopped diving. I didn't resume again until I saw Jaws II... it was so absurd I got over my fear of great whites. In 36 years of diving the waters where some of the Jaws series was filmed, I've never seen a great white underwater.. just topside from boats.

Although it isn't a movie, my favorite TV series is "Surface." It is so absurd and poorly acted it is actually funny. Heck, I've already forgotten all the old Sea Hunt episodes anyway.

Actually I prefer documentaries to Hollywierd movies when it comes to underwater.

As far as moivies that feature diving and that include plenty of dive footage The Deep is hard to beat. It's nice that it's in a fairly recreational/ adventure setting so as a diver I can relate to it. I never clocked it but it must be close to 50% bottom time.

Underwater! would probably be second for having plenty of footage and the vintage twist. Of course it was made when that was SOP diving.

Some of the Bond movies have some OK scenes but I wouldn't call them dive movies. The exception would be Thunderball for underwater combat entusiasts, the big ending battle is pretty significant, so are some of the other scenes.

Too often movies feature scuba in the plot but they barely get into the water and it's over. Producers like to include it for the adventure tease but don't/won't/can't invest in what it takes to capture good footage.

Nothing beats the real thing. I can't wait to shake this head cold!
