Diver died due to incident in swimming pool in Amstelveen
47 minutes ago · Edited 2 minutes ago · By NH Nieuws
A diver died in hospital today after an incident in the De Meerkamp swimming pool in Amstelveen. Employees are shocked and devastated, the pool is closed for the rest of the day.

It is believed that the diving instructor's compressed air cylinder exploded while diving. Police, fire brigade, several ambulances and a trauma helicopter came to the swimming pool to provide the employee with medical care. The victim was then rushed to hospital where he died.

Very shocked
Pool employees are shocked. "It has a huge impact on us. You don't experience something like that every day," says Suzan Kaynar, coordinator at De Meerkamp. She and her colleagues are currently receiving guidance from Victim Support. "Three years ago we also had CPR in the pool. Some colleagues are now reliving this feeling."

The pool will remain closed for the rest of the day. The Labor Inspectorate is continuing to investigate what exactly happened.

Amstelveen mayor Tjapko Poppens expresses his condolences. “This is a fatal accident. Our condolences go out to the next of kin of the victim. Swimming pool employees and those present at the incident are also shocked and devastated. Victim support and GGD have been called in for people who need it. At diving club Nemo, the devastation after the incident is great. We are also awaiting the results of the labor inspectorate's investigation."

How in hell did this happen?

Water probably went in the cylinders and they were maybe not maintained probably?

Can water in the cylinder cause an explosion?

Perhaps the regulator failed catastrophically and he was deep in that nemo pool and then embolized? Very unusual for a tank to explode while being used. Who knows?

Can water in the cylinder cause an explosion?
It will cause rust, the “burst” will happen when the pressure changes and the cylinder was weakened.

This is why you are taught to never let a tank go completely empty, so that the pressure prevents water/moisture to enter the tank.

Also there is a regular schedule of visual inspections and hydros to follow to continue using a tank.

Normally a tank would explode when it is filled, not when it is used because it is put under more duress when it is filled?
