I don't know if this has come up before, but I was cleaning some scallops yesterday, and today my left hand is all swollen up, with lots of tiny bumps on it. That is the hand I was holding the scallops in, the knife was in my right, predominatly. I am not allergic, I eat them all the time, but having thought about it, I think this happened last time I cleaned them, though not as bad. (I didn't clean as many.) My theory is that I just let the shells scrape my hand all up, (albiet very fine scratches), and the shell 'crud' just got in there, with the reaction I am now noticing.

Any alternate ideas?

Next time I'll wear gloves.

Shells may have had small hydroids or other stinging growths on them.

Best regards.
