Awesome day of diving at Point Lobos at the Great Pinnacle! This is a site I usually only get to by underwater scooter, though I'm sure many of you may have dived it off a small boat. This day I dove it off the Escapade with about 20 other BAUE (BAUE Home Page) divers. We had various teams doing different activities such as line surveying, photography, Reef Check (fish and other countings), Scooter surveys. My job was to do video which I did.

I used a Mako housing with a Sony PC 100 single CCD camera. Beto Nava flooded the LCD monitor of his good camera, so this was the backup. We'll see how the video turns out as I'm editing it now.

Anyway the dive was very nice with about 50 feet of viz and I was able to video a lot of the teams. Temps seemed pretty warm at around 52 degrees, max depth was 95 feet with a bottom time of 50 minutes (not all at 95 feet.) This was a particularly fun dive for me as I could feel my trim and buoyancy was much easier making it so much more comfortable to be in the water, manipulating the video, being steady with so much less effort. I think I'm beginning to get this diving thing.

I'll post the video when I finish editing it and share it with everyone. I'm not too enthused about the camera though. I think I'll stick to the little Canon SDs and when I jump up into a bigger camera, it'll be something much better than a Sony PC 100 or that series.

I'm really jealous Doc! I did get to blow bubbles yesterday but it was only in 10ft of pool water (class). I thought about looking for a housing for my Sony but not sure if it's worth it. I think I'll stick with my Canon for a while too. :D

I can't wait to see the video!

Happy diving,

Cant wait to see the video when it is ready.

Happy diving,

At least you were in the water! I've been in the same position and doing pool work is somewhat satisfying. You can practice buoyancy control even in the pool! With friends or students, to keep the boredom away, I'll see if I can improve my control, hovering staying perfectly still, motionless and at the same depth.

I unfortunately had a bad headache after my rescue class pool sessions (about 5 hours after, probably dehydrated) and was having trouble clearing my ears that night as well...I watched it the next morning and decided not to do the rest of the rescue scenarios just to be safe. Lots of water helped, but I was still having trouble with my ear. I'm jealous of you guys who actually got to dive. :)

That's exactly what I was practicing most yesterday. I've been having issues with my trim and got to try some things to improve my hover. I did the OW skills eval for my DM class and found that I still have to work on my comfort level having my reg out of my mouth for a period of time. We did the equipment exchange and I had a hard time buddy breathing when I was thinking too much about it. I was fine as soon as I was distracted removing my gear or something, but started to panic when I had time to think about it. I guess I just need more water time! :D

That's too bad Brad! Have you tried alcohol in your ear?

It should be fine in a few days...I did add a flu shot to the mix, so we'll see how that plays out. Actually not really a shot, but goop in my nose....I had the flu mist last year...Weirdness. It makes you sniffle (probably not a word, nevermind dictionary says otherwise...carry on) for about an hour. Anyway, the ear isn't bad right, just a little slow to clear. We'll see in a couple of days....As long as it's gone for my Channel Islands trip. :)
