Because not ALL of the containers originally dumped remained closed? Perhaps one or more broke open?

However, yet another Thai drama unfolding.

Maybe, I really don't know.
I'll keep an eye on the news and will post updates.

So far not much real news about the containers:

A disturbing story now from Sattahip District involving the discovery of containers thought to contain dead bodies.
The story first broke last week on Thai TV Channel 3 following the discovery of a container surrounded by reportedly hundreds of skeletons. This discovery was made almost two months ago but remained a closely guarded secret until the story was leaked to the press last week..
We understand that a total of 8 containers have been found in three separate locations between Phie Island and Pram Island and 30 nautical miles off the Coast of Juang Island which are all located in the Gulf of Thailand.
For many years fishermen have reported the capture of skeletal remains in their fishing nets, however many cases have remained unreported.
There is a suggestion some of the containers have been at the locations for up to 20 years. Now that the exact locations of the containers have been identified and a full report has been made to the Police, it is thought these containers will now be recovered and the contents will be revealed.
Locals fear the worse and suggest the containers are full of bodies, but this cannot be confirmed until the containers are recovered.

MYSTERIOUS CONTAINERS
Tiny camera to be used to see inside containers : Dr Pornthip

A tiny underwater camera may soon slip through a hole in a mysterious container on the seabed off Chon Buri's Sattahip district to check what is inside.
"We have found a hole on the container through which groupers swim in and swim out," Central Institute of Forensic Science director Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan revealed Monday.

She said she would have a meeting with representatives from the Customs Department, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), marine archaeologists and noted marine biologist Dr Thon Thamrongnawasawat on Tuesday to discuss possible means of checking what's inside the container and where the container came from.

"Representatives from underwatercamera companies will attend the meeting too," Porntip said.

Porntip has been assigned to look into the containers after they caught the media spotlight and rumours spread the bodies of those who died in the Black May incident were inside.

Porntip's team has already located one of the containers.

Porntip has ruled out lifting the container from the sea for examination because the process would require a huge budget.

The Pollution Control Department (PCD), meanwhile, has voiced opposition against any plan to cut open the container underwater.

"If toxic waste is inside, cutting the container open in the sea would cause farflung environmental impacts," PCD director general Dr Supat Wangwongwattana said.

Nevertheless, he doubts the container harbours toxic waste because coral reefs and fishes would have been affected.

Officials have now suggested the container has rested on the seabed off Chon Buri for more than 20 years, judging by the barnacles found on it.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva as well as many highprofile figures have pointed out the mysterious container could not be related to the Black May incident, which took place 17 years ago.

Can we keep this thread to the diving accident that happened and not hi jack it with unrelated information. If you feel inclinded Bowmouth, feel free to open a new thread.

Thanks.

Mermaids Dive Center would like to provide information regarding the Search and Recovery Operation over the last couple of weeks.

Mermaids was requested to help and provide logistical aid to assist in locating the 2 lost divers. Over the last 2 weeks since the incident occurred, our Dive Team has located and recovered one of the divers at no deeper than 50m close to the Samae San Hole. Also found on a separate day, was one fin belonging to the remaining missing diver.

We are still out every day searching and will continue to do so for now.

Thanks mermaids. This is just what is needed, clear concise facts.
I hope this will now put an end to all the idle speculation that has been going on.

Yesterday I watched a quite lengthy news report on Thai TV about the search for the missing Instructor. Divers are still searching for the Instructor but haven't found him yet.

Today the Nation,an English language news paper in Thailand, claims that the search has been stopped;

Qute; Navy and rescue teams Tuesday stop searching for Wiwat Tiraronnakorn, a diving instructor, who was swept away by strong underwater waves with his diving student off Satahip, Chon Buri last week. Only body of student was retrieved.

Unfortunately no link, just a text under a picture of what I assume is a boat involved in the search with divers in the water on their home page.

Skeletal remains washed-up on beach in Na-Jomtien.

Early on Monday Morning, Police Lieutenant Supawat from Na-Jomtien Police Station was called to an area of beach behind the Dor-Shada Resort located in Na-Jomtien to investigate reports of skeletal remains which had apparently been washed up on the beach. Police and local rescue services arrived and inspected the remains which included a pelvic bone with its two femur bones still attached. A pair of red underpants was also over the pelvic bone indicating the brand name Å« Press which is a Thai Brand who only distribute to the domestic market which lead Police to believe that the remains are those of a Thai, however any formal identification is not possible at this time and because of the large size of the bones recovered, the remains could well belong to a foreigner. One theory is that the remains may be that of dive-master Khun Wiwat, who went missing off the coast of Sattahip last month. Police are now sifting through missing personÃÔ reports as they attempt to identify the remains.

Not always the most accurate reporting

Khun Wiwat was not a DM but an Instructor. Furthermore, it would be interesting to know what Khun Wiwat was wearing during the dive that he went missing, When he was wearing shorts and a rash vest, it could well be part of his remains, however, if he was wearing a shorty or similar dive gear, it's very unlikely, imho, that the remains belong to Khun Wiwat.

I hope the forensic team will be able to id the remains soon. Going through all this must be horrible for Khun Wiwat's family...
