you did the right thing. Please feel better.

It's never easy to lose a pet. They become part of the family. My condolences.

I have lost many four legged family members from a Ginnie pig to my beloved 30 year old horse and many in-between. I feel your loss. I now have two elderly greyhounds and an older whippet and don't look forward to having to make those decisions again. I do however; take some comfort knowing that they are all waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge.... http://www.petloss.com/poems/maingrp/rainbowb.htm

You did the right thing.
It's an awful thing to be the one to have to make the call. You have to be strong to love something that much. Peace to you brother, and your family.

My Tasha (14 yr old Keeshond) had a stroke while I was out of town on business and my wife had to handle the trip alone. My Emma (16 yr old mutt) had congestive heart failure -we (I) put off the trip to the vet too long and she died on the way, exhausted.
I have a lot of regrets and am pretty scarred by both times.

I know what you mean about the quiet - I still get misty once in a while after everyone else is in bed and I am in the chair they used to crowd with me. I really loved both dogs and swore I would never get another. The pain dulls with time tho.

Post script: We now have two that are as close to me. Zoey (cur/catahoula mix) and Pumpkin (pitt/mutt). Thank God my wife is smarter than I and talked me into taking them in. They are the definition of loyal - and I'd put my life on the line for them now.

I have a dog of 10 years. Her name is Sandy, and though she is quite healthy, I would feel as I'm sure you do if and when I lose her. I am so sorry for your loss. When we are lucky enough to have a relationship with a dog and it becomes part of our family we learn so many lessons. We should be more like them; so forgiving. I hope that you will remember all the good memories with you dog and hope that one day you'll be able to experience a new relationship with another when the time is right. There are so many dogs out there that would love to enjoy the love that you showed Maverick. God bless.
