I have been reading this thread from the time it started and I am not sure how it became a "RoatanMan" thing or why even after re-reading it! I will say this I have been going to Roatan for 10 years and have a number of what I would call friends there! I have a friend that went with me and is now building a house there! When I first went they had power until 10pm and then again at 6am. It was not reliable in anyway and I understand the frustration considering the ownership problems, billing, corruption, and all the thing you get with growing pains! I also know water is a bigger problem, just wait! I know the island and the people well enough to know "RoatanMan" has a lot of knowledge about the island that is spot on! We all have our own preferences, likes, and dislikes. In hundreds of dives there I have my favorite spots and had the unique opportunityto be involved in the Spooky Channel Project: Spooky Channel So I favor the north side and BIBR because I have spent so much time there! But I have been to CCV and AKR and have dived with them and others! Shane at BIBR is one of my favorite NAUI instructors and supports Tech diving and is where Tim O'leary from NAUI does a lot of his training! That is my disclosure and I have seen some bad wrecks on the roads, but would also tell you that the Islands main source of income is us and they will make sure we are safe, as much as they can! So I stand by RM and the island itself as deserve and safe for divers! Who needs stinking power;)

It became about RM when he decided to discredit the OP. After reading several of RMÃÔ posts, this appears to be his MO when anyone has a contrary opinion to his.

On the other hand, I appreciate your reasoned and unbiased view point!

Jeez-

Y'all skip all the drama and just come to Utila. :D

Lots of reliable power here. :cool2:

Like papabear I've also been following this thread. We're going there in April and I'm trying to learn as much about the area as I can. From what I've read I can't find where RM discredited ncchuck. For someone who hasn't been there reading the travel warning could be very concerning. ncchuck tempered the tone of the warning in his opening paragraph and then Roatanman softened them a bit more. Just like issac, UTLgirl, bstone, tilmiser and danktex also did with reports of first hand knowledge from during the event.

That's when you popped in to take ncchucks comments one step further with an attack that wasn't even veiled.

From the view of a total outsider to this whole thing you sure seem to the one with an ax to grind here. Your methods and tone aren't very conducive woooing people to your point of view.

In fact when considering that all 6 of your posts thus far are either attacks on CCV or roatanman one could easily come to the conclusion that you're merely a troll...:troll:

BINGO!!!! I think we have a winner;)....I know RoatanMan personally...he is very knowlegable about Roatan....and has been diving for many years in many oceans around the world...

Wow, the protest lasted 2 days, this thread has now lasted 9 days past the end of the actual protest.

For those that have an interest in the original topic;

Travel warnings associated with Honduras or the BI's can be found at:
Honduras.usembassy.gov or travel.state.gov/travel

'Current' news RE: Honduras & the BI's in English can be found at:
Honduasthisweek.com (weekly)
Utilaeastwind.com (monthly although they update major news as it happens-and the internet connection allows :) )
Bayislandsvoice.com (monthly)
hondurasnews.com

For those that read Spanish, daily publications such as La Prensa, La Tribuna & Tiempo have parts of their publications on line daily.

Hope the info helps.

My biggest concern as a dive tourist is the electricity. I'm headed to Roatan for my third trip there in a week. On a previous trip, that horribly corrupt utility did lead to some power disruptions which lead to some trouble in acquiring air and cut off all nitrox access for the week at a well regarded Roatan resort. I believe they've got their own backup generator and are no longer relying on the utility.

Depending where you stay it should not be a problem. I was in West End during the few days the power was out. I never really noticed it was off. I have been going there a couple times a year for a few years now. Every time I come back there seem to be more generators. BTW I believe the power plant is under new ownership. Some locals I talked to seem to be optimistic about the reliability increasing and corruption decreasing. Of course the cost of service has doubled which is unfortunate for those that can least afford it. Even with a 100% increase in cost Roatan still has cheaper electric than Utila and Guanaja.
