i have a set of old steel doubles where the DOT markings are pretty obscured between age, wear, paint, etc. I can barely make them out (probably because I know what to look for). Fortunately, the other tank is still very legible.

Any thoughts on how to try and restore it? It is supposed to say E9791-3500

Put a white paper on the markings and use a pencil on the top side of the paper to create an image of the markings on the paper. (move the pencil back and forth between left and right over the markings to create the image).

I know what the markings are. I'm trying to make them more visible on the tank itself, for future hydro testing.

(b) Placement of markings. Each cylinder must be plainly and permanently marked on the metal of the cylinder as permitted by the applicable specification. Unless authorized by the cylinder specification, marking on the cylinder sidewall is prohibited.

(1) Requalification and required specification markings must be legible so as to be readily visible at all times. Illegible specification markings may be remarked on the cylinder as provided by the original specification. Requalification markings may be placed on any portion of the upper end of the cylinder excluding the sidewall, as provided in this section. Requalification and required specification markings that are illegible may be reproduced on a metal plate and attached as provided by the original specification.

So I could ask the guy at the hydro shop to re-stamp it then?

Cool. Thanks everyone.

Good news is I have until May 2021 to solve this...

Another question-

Do they need to be able to read the DOT markings if the Test Pressure is stamped directly on the tank?
