Rejoining PADI
Any of you PADI Instructors ever had a hiatus in PADI membership and attempted to rejoin the tribe?
What type of obstacles did you encounter?
* Financial obligations?
* Waterman ship?
* Diving knowledge test?
* Recommendations from active PADI instructors?
* Any other requirements not listed above?

I made an inquiry at PADI HQ about two years ago. I was in the process of purchasing a PADI Dive Shop in Tobago and felt that re-certifying would be prudent. I was told that it wouldn't be a problem. The Training Director I spoke with seemed pleased that I had been actively teaching since leaving PADI (NAUI/CMAS) and seemed excited to get an 'older Instructor' back into the fold. As the Dive Shop deal fell through, I didn't end-up pursuing it. I suspect that one call to PADI HQ will answer your question.

I trust you are well Sam. It's great to see you on the Forum. Regards,

Wayne

Depending on how long you have been out of PADI you may have to go thru an entire IDC / IE..Easiest way to avoid that is to go into non-teaching status and keep current with any standards changes. Call PADI to get the definitive answer. If out for only 1-2 years it may be as simple as attending an update. More than that it may require IDC / IE...

Wayne, I am still hanging in ...Still researching and on occasion writing a few pages, and some times posting... To day I am presenting a speech at the San Louis Obispo S&R conference on the "History of the single hose regulator" beginning with the father of the single hose, Ted Eldridge in 1950 to present day. The presentation will open a few eyes! Diving sure and the heck didn't begin with PADI and all the fuzzy faced instructors..... Hope all is well with you and yours......... Did I ever mention that my wife's father was from NS? My dear wife Betty was born in Toronto "several years ago." Many years ago as a teen ager she decided she was not one of "God's Frozen People," but rather a Sun drenched Kalifornia Beach Bunny- By the way she is now a College President. SDM

I didn't renew membership for over a year before (I was in Afghanistan...no diving). When I wanted to renew again afterwards, I just had to sit through the online update. Easy. Demands get more stringent after multiple years absence, I am sure...

Sam, glad to see that you're hanging in, but given your determination, it's what one would expect. I agree that Diving surely didn't begin with "PADI and the fuzzy faced instructors," but they sure have showed the World how to make a buck out of it (of which I have mixed feelings). You were a big part of how diving evolved in North America and I for one appreciate your substantial contributions!

Things are fine in the great white north, my three sons are grown and my wife Amy and I now enjoy our grand children. I remember you mentioning that Betty was born in Toronto (as was I). Although there still are beautiful women in Canada, I'm afraid they're far too many that want to run-off to become Sun drenched Kalifornia Beach Bunnies. I suppose that its guys like you that reap the benefit (leaving the rest of us up here to shiver in our igloos)...

Is Sam Jr. still a NAUI Instructor? Maybe between the two of us we can get you back involved with NAUI. What would it take to turn you away from the dark side? :)

Be well Sam and God bless.

Wayne
