I have a proton ice extreme that is about 1 year old. It has been whistling in the 2nd stage ever since I got it. On a recent trip to Thailand it irritated me so much that I had it serviced. The charged me parts but not service as I didn't have my owners card but they could see it was nearly new and not used much. Next trip, same whistling. It is irritating to myself and others. Left it back to the mares authorized dealer, they tweaked it a bit. Same whistling as before so I am stuck using my octo. Any ideas? Thanks

It is very likely the second stage poppet spring. This is a fairly common occurence with regs across all lines, and is easily remedied by replacement of the spring. As the incoming air flows around the spring, it causes the spring to vibrate. The vibration then causes the whistling sound. It takes less than 10 minutes to switch the spring, and to tune the second stage.

Hi,

I agree with Greg. This is a fairly common occurrence with regulators from all brands. Most of the time it is a simple remedy to switch out the spring and voila. While not a safety issue, I can appreciate your irritation with the sound.

Please feel free to post if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

just wondering while it's whistling, can it carry a tune? 8-]
