Has anyone noticed that the price of steel tanks have been going up? I remember them going for approx 330 dollars for a HP 100, now I can't find any place less than $370??

Anyone know why they are going up?

Steel prices are up considerably for one thing.

+1 on the steel prices . . . but also, shipping of the steel tanks (to dealer) costs more because fuel prices are up. When shipping tends to cost $ per pound X miles transported, it gets pricey.

I'm pretty much brand new to diving and I just picked up a steel LP 72 this weekend (14 years older than me) from my local dive shop. Tank + Hydro + Vis + full of air = $90. The next day I saw an add on craigslist and told my buddy to check it out. He went with it and picked up three LP 72s and one LP 95 for $100 (2 of them need hydro and vis, and if he's really nice, maybe he'll let me take one LP 72 off his hands :eyebrow:).

I was really tempted to buy a nice HP steel tank, but I figured for the price, I should blow some bubbles first and build up my experience.

Are used tanks a good option in your opinion? (I guess used HP 100s are hard to come by?)

Just picked up 2 steel 72's in hydro and vis with a fill for $75 each. The guy at the shop (not our local) refused to fill one of our older tanks so we asked him what he had for sale. I think it was a good call.

You beat me to this deal.

:( Sorry bout that! I've been getting skunked on craigslist lately and there are a couple shady looking tanks for sale. Just now I saw a posting for a decent HP 100 in Santa Cruz for $85. Dive Gear-Wetsuits-BC-Tank

Would be worth taking a peek if you're on the way to Monterey :)
I think I'll stick to my one tank for now.

I think that the word is out on steel tanks. It's sort of like the oil prices, supply and demand.

If those are worthingtons then it might be because the tanks are made in Canada and the Canadian dollar went up
