This has probably been covered many times before, I did a search and could not find anything. I did find a couple of things but could not open the attachments. Maybe its my old comp or inexperience on computer. Could someone please post what they use for a pre-dive check list for basic diving. Your post would be greatly appreceated.
Thanks

I think Captndale has pretty much nailed it. I would put extra emphasis on checking that your buoyancy(BC and Drysuit, where applicable) is hooked up and air turned on. That can kill you in a hurry, and it's pretty easy to forget.

You are on the right track with the check list idea.

Some other realted suggestions are:

* Keep all of your gear in a designated place and load in a routine manner as you can. Habit is your friend here. Visualize yourself going through your dive day as you survey the contents of your loaded vehicle.

* When gearing up be sure to concentrate. Being in a different setting, with different divers or engaged in a great conversation is what it's all about. Unfortunately those same conditions have led to some of the most boneheaded things I have done to date. It's at times like this that a list can be your friend.

Thanks for the info so far. I guess what I was thinking of doing was making a check list of the things I have to check and do while getting gear ready while on the boat. I'd like to maybe laminate it and attach it to gear bag. Like you said, there are a lot of distractions on the boat for someone who is new at this. It would maybe help in making these things become a habit. Thanks.

Not sure what agency you train with but there's always the ole PADI "BWRAF" that should have been nailed into you B= BCD, inflator hose, clips, W=weights, R= releases, both yours and your buddys, A= Air, F= Final okay

I was just thinking about this yesterday, but didn't want to post because I was afraid it had already been covered. What I'm thinking about, instead of gear checks so much, are the things you go over with your buddy, like the dive plan, the contingencies, etc.

Ususally my dive plans are very simple, like go to the end of the jetty along the bottom and come back. I've found, though, that I never really cover enough of those, "what ifs". Fortunately, so far I haven't had anything notable go wrong, but that's no reason not to plan.

One common contingency goes something like, "if we separate look around for one minute, then surface." But does that include a safety stop?

Anyway, do any of you have a checklist of things you go over with your insta-buddies?

You might also want to inflate an SMB (Surface Marker Buoy), since it's really easy for both buddies to surface and still not be able to see each other. This makes it tempting for one or both to go back down to look for the other, which is generally a really bad idea.

If it's a deeper dive where a yoyo profile is not going to work then there are alternative plans.

One diver is designated to sit still for X number of minutes while dive 2 makes a concentric pattern favoring where he probably lost the buddy. This can beat surfacing and swimming back.
