Giggi:
Don't hate the breed. Hate stupid owners who treat their pets like children. Dogs are ANIMALS, not human beings. They want and need discipline, and if you don't show them who's boss, they will take the leadership position.

Cesar Millan is my hero.

Ditto i'm in love with that show and I don't have a dog :14:!
I've learnt a lot watching that show so if and when I get a dog I think i'll be better able to handle it.

Green_Manelishi:
Says you.

Pit bulls (and I am aware it's a term not favored by some) were originally bred to fight. Despite all the chattering to the contrary, that's what that breed has as part of its genetic makeup and to deny it is idiotic. So, when it cops a tude, it's just doing its thing. Too bad "its thing" is so frequently injurious to whatever it did its thing to.

I'd no sooner keep a breed of dog that was bred to fight than I'd keep a snake that did its thing by biting and injecting venom, or constricting.

dogs are all ultimately all descended from wolves. i suggest you stay away from even the smallest chihuahua since their genetic makeup is designed to kill...

H2Andy:
how about smell?

personally, i think that if a dog is close enough to you to get to you,
you're gonna take a lot of damage

i'd prefer to keep them off me.

i also doubt that there will be time to shoot the dog more than once or
twice, and i don't think that's going to stop their charge, particularly a
larger dog.

I totally agree with keeping them off of you but that's not always an option. With plan "A" out, you need plans B,C and D ready to go.
With the pain involved I kind of doubt he would be in any mood to continue the attack but even if he did, your odds are a lot better. Dogs track by smell but use sight for the final attack.
As for shooting the dog, it depends on a lot of factors but I would agree the average person would not stand very good odds. That's a big reason for pepper spray, hard to miss and if you have to wait until he is very close, no big deal. On the other hand a person that practices a fair amount could do pretty well with a reasonable caliber. 2 or 3 well placed shots is quite easy to do in under 3 seconds for a average shooter with a little practice and easily in the 1.5 to 2 second range for someone who practices often. The noise alone may be a big enough deterrent.

an exceedingly apt metaphor, comparing

a wild
small-brained
solitary
predator
reptile

on one hand with

a domestic
rather intelligent
social
mainly scavanger
mammal

on the other ...

Lamont! You are so intelligent! Do you really believe what you are saying?
This thread is making me crazy. Do you understand genetics? A Chihuahua and a Pit Bull, the same genetics??
Oh my gosh....I am speechless.

Andy, I think you are playing devil's advocate too. When you people drop your five year old somewhere with Pit Bulls, give me a call.

sorry, i can get fairly dry, caustic and sarcastic at times -- particularly on the internet...

the dog i grew up with (it was 6 months older than me) was a 1/2 german shepherd, 1/4 wolf, 1/4 malamute and she only snapped at me a couple of times and i had given her a whole lot of cause... when we used to live on annette island in alaska, the other dogs would wait around for her down by the creek where she'd go out there and jump on her front legs to break through the ice to let all the dogs drink, which apparently was the wolf genetics at work... she lived to be 16...

Look, I love dogs. I just really think you all are not clear on this Pit Bull thing.....but to each their own.
That sounds like a great animal, BTW.
Some Pit Bulls are probably great, but I would be very careful around them, more so than a lot of other breeds. Thats all I am saying.

When I was small a big dog grabbed my leg and wanted to make babies with me...
So when all was said and done, did you at least get to keep the pick of the litter?

When I was small a big dog grabbed my leg and wanted to make babies with me. Everytime I tried to move, he would narl at me. Scared the S out of me, and I had to stand there till my dad came out of the house.........keep your dogs in your yard. Do dogs really enjoy peeing somewhere else than in their own yard? I don't even think they realise they are in a different place? Why do people take dogs for a ride?

Hey that happened to me too as a boy, lol......
Couldn't figure out at that time what the **** was up with that dog..

But now I know...., lol, memories...
