According to Shearwater in the other thread, the compass can be disabled. And the Petrel 2 won't cost any more than the original Petrel. Incredible.

I just read that too. Surely there is more but after quickly perusing their website and FB page, the only upgrades I see are the compass (which can be disabled as you stated) and a new bluetooth download capability.

They're already available on the web.

I just ordered one... :cool2:

You sly dog you! :)

funny huh victor!?! We were just talking about that in the thread I started asking for recommendations. I had wondered if Shearwater may introduce something at DEMA and lo and behold looky here. I lobbed an email as a lark. Companies never release forward info on future product releases as they wouldn't sell any of the current version. I just had lucky timing that Shearwater was planning on releasing the product.

I haven't even looked at the details to see what the improvements/differences are.

It has a compass? LOL I can't wait to see what the Tec community thinks about that!

Yeah, it seems like the only difference is the compass. If the compass is accurate, doesn't get in the way, and doesn't kill the battery....I'm all for it. I'm in the market for a back-up computer, so I might have to get a Petrel2 and use my current Petrel as a backup!

Only other thing I'll say for now is: Centex, you now know what to get!

The Shearwater website states that the Petrel and Petrel 2 use the same firmware.
So why drop almost a grand on a Petrel 2 when the only difference is a compass (which many people said they don't like anyway)?

What's this about BT downloading?
The Petrel uses BT downloading.
What's the difference between the original BT downloading and the "new" type?

I'm going to start a log of all the people who have posted poopooing compasses in their DC who now post that they are getting a Petrel 2. :)

You won't need much paper.

Yep Victor, this just cinched the deal for me I believe.

The compass itself doesn't use much power, but we have to refresh the screen more often when the compass is being displayed, so that uses a bit more power. I completely understand people not wanting extra menu entries for things they never use. For those that don't want to use the compass, they can disable it. We have always spent a lot of time making the menus as simple as possible.

The newer Bluetooth chip allows connections to Apple handheld devices.

Why? Because I need a new dive computer and am in the market. It's not a grand, it's $850.

Straight from the horses, err owner's, mouth! Bruce, are there any other upgrades to the new version besides the compass and new bluetooth chip? I see there is a new firmware which has Chinese language support option. Anything else?

The new firmware will have some bug fixes and refinements. Probably the biggest change is allowing monitoring of two sensors on Fischer versions. Previously we only allowed one or three sensors.
