The new Oled displays look great in the dark, but are not as easy to read as the Luna on a bright day.

And yet the Petrel has a full color LCD screen that's got better resolution and nearly as good contrast as the OLED screens, without the bright light washout issues. When is SP finally going to junk that POS antique of a design?

Before I was into tech, I bought a DG03. It has the option of AI, is reliable (as long as you have the updated version of the firmware), and you can pick it up for cheap:

I personally have a Petrel and also still have the DG03 which I use as a backup/in gauge mode.
There's no arguing with the fact that the Petrel is the best dive computer available, so you really can't go wrong with it.
If you want a simple computer and don't want to spend as much, take a look at the DG03.

I did my deco course on a sunto Geeko (it was basicaly a bottom timer) and the thing kept locking me out for 24h after the dive because I went into deco. This summer I bought a petrel...never regretted it ! The thing works. Period. You don't necessarily need a Petrel if you're staying in recreational diving...but try it and you won't go back.

My buddy flooded his Petrel by not tightening enough the battery casing. Our dive shop sent the computer back to them explaining that it was his fault and he was accepting to pay for another one. Shearwater sent him a brand new computer...free. You pay for what you get. That 900 $ computer worth every single last penny.

Holy crap, the Petrel2 is a Petrel with a compass!! I thought you were being a buttface!

funny huh victor!?! We were just talking about that in the thread I started asking for recommendations. I had wondered if Shearwater may introduce something at DEMA and lo and behold looky here. I lobbed an email as a lark. Companies never release forward info on future product releases as they wouldn't sell any of the current version. I just had lucky timing that Shearwater was planning on releasing the product.

I haven't even looked at the details to see what the improvements/differences are.

It has a compass? LOL I can't wait to see what the Tec community thinks about that!

Did they add extra hardware or was the compass chip already in the unit and just not activated until now? In other words, can current petrels be upgraded to have this? This ticks another one of my boxes!

Now, with the Dive Can system, maybe AI will be an option later on, for those of us who would use it . . ..

According to Shearwater in the other thread, the compass can be disabled. And the Petrel 2 won't cost any more than the original Petrel. Incredible.
