I've had some PADI instructors tell me that I am REQUIRED to tear the knowledge reviews out of the book and hand them in. Can't make a photocopy and write my answers on that. Can't write out the questions and answers on paper. Can't do anything but destroy the book. Other instructors don't mention this "requirement" at all. You merely need to turn in some form of knowledge review, and hand writing out just the answers is fine. So which it? Is an instructor allowed to not certify you simply because you refuse to destroy your own property? Is this really a PADI requirement?

I prefer to keep my books intact for later reference and don't want go to around tearing them up. I also don't think I should be required to destroy my own property.

Thanks!

I think his requirement is absurd.
I have all of my NAUI course books from all of my courses from Open Water through Master Diver and they are all intact.

I copied the end of chapter exercises and handed them in.
If it is in fact a PADI requirement it sounds like a contrived attempt at selling more books.

My 3 kids were certified PADI OW last year. They photocopied the knowledge reviews and turned them in. This was 100% ok with their instructor, and in fact was what he recommended they do.

I can see NO valid reason for the instructor needing the original page for his file. A photocopy with your sig or initials should be plenty to cover him/her for liability purposes (which is why they need the completed knowledge reviews in their file I believe).

Yep. Sounds to me like the instructor is getting a percentage of every manual sold....

PADI does not allow the copying of their copyrighted material. PADI instructors, particularly, because they have a contractual relationship with PADI are bound to follow the copyright licensing agreement they have with PADI. A student is less strictly bound. I am not a lawyer but it was explained to me that a PADI instructor may not copy the quizzes and distribute them to his students, but a student may copy his own book, fill in the quiz and turn the copy in to the instructor. Others may have a different interpretation.

All: Yeah, I figured this was BS. I just wanted to confirm it.

PADI does not allow the copying of their copyrighted material.
What they allow doesn't matter with respect to the law. Making a photocopy out of a book you purchased and writing answers on it and turning it in is a perfect example of "fair use" under the copyright law.

This is true. It's clearly not "fair use".

But anyway - you guys have confirmed my suspicions. Thanks :)

There appears to be mistake on the part of the instructor, please feel free to contact PADI quality assurance (QA) with ALL the details, who, what, where, when ect. The e-mail address is QA@Padi.com, I would also request replacement books.

From the PADI 4th quarter 2005 training bulletin for instructors et cetera:

"4. Knowledge Reviews for each Knowledge Development section signed by the student

(You must either retain the student diver's completed and signed Knowledge Reviews or document in the student's training record that you have reviewed the student's completed Knowledge reviews. The Student Record File may be used for the purpose"

Note: Student divers can submit to you photocopies of their completed Knowledge Reviews if the prefer to retain the original in their manuals as a reference and study tool. You and your student are not authorized to photocopy blank Knowledge Reviews."

A few years back, PADI used to require instructors have the original copy of the KRs filled in by the students. They have since changed the standards on this as pointed out in the previous post. Some instructors apparently don't read the quarterly updates... :shakehead:

B.S.

Total B.S.

I have PADI OW, AOW & Rescue, as well as Boat, Deep, Night, Peak Perf. Buoyancy and UW Navigation. I have NEVER written in my book and have ALWAYS turned in my Knowledge Reviews on either photocopies or printouts (from my OW CD).

Besides, if the student is using the e-learning or the CD, THERE IS NO BOOK for them to write in and destroy.

...a student may copy his own book, fill in the quiz and turn the copy in to the instructor.
Exactly. We're not allowed to copy the PADI material so the proper course of action would be for each student to get the PADI OWD manual, fill in the Knowledge Reviews then copy them and give the copies to the instructor.

Personally, I don't agree with tearing the KR out and never told my students to do it. They do keep the book and often the KR part serves as a good reference.
