All of my "gift bags" are now cloth re-usable bags. Instead of the laminated poster paper bags that rip and are never reused by anyone except my grandmother, I purchase the $1.00 re-usables at our grocery stores and use the shoulder straps to tie the gift inside.

Baby steps.

I had no trouble finding it there by searching on "Algalita"

Crazy, I searched for "algalita marine research foundation" and FB came back with nothing, then I search for Algalita and a bunch of stuff shows up. That's why I love FB search.

We were (are) egregious users of plastic bags because we've got two Golden Retrievers and the plastic bags make great poop pick up bags. Gonna have to find a new method for that pick up when on walks. Any suggestions?

My wife is also a predigious user of bottles water - much to my chagrin as I had an RO water filter built into our sink a couple years ago for an anniversary gift! - and I'm trying to wean her off that as well.

For the dogs yard waste I'm going to get one of those in ground composting contraptions.

Also gonna pick up a couple canvas bags to keep in our cars so we don't need to use plastic.

In addition to alerting people about this does some type of "guide" exist for helping folks understand what they can do to avoid using plastics? Something like a "do this xxxxx not this xxxx" Ex - Do this - Carry a reusable canvas bag to the grocery NOT use a plastic bag.

Imagine how many less plastic bags would be saved if we all just asked for paper instead of plastic and simply refuse a plastic bag for items you can carry out easily.

This post relates to this thread but is more specifically a HATS OFF and KUDOS to Shaka Doug for the advertisement that I just saw here directly extending advertising and help linking to this cause for support for ScubaDrew and his voyage.

Thanks Doug.

Plastic bags are going to be around for a while yet even in places that phase out the free tote bags. Bread bags etc. are good for picking up the dog crap and as long as you are disposing of it securely then while it's not perfect it's about as good as you can get short term.

Just don't do what I see so very often here on Wellingtons south coast.. For some reason there are dog owners who think it's a great idea to bag the crap and then chuck the bag behind a rock so they don't have to carry it?? What the hell is the logic with that? At least the dog crap will rot away very quickly.. I'll pick up at least a couple of these bagged treats a week..:shakehead:

Thanks ScubaSteve! I can't take all the credit though....

There seems to be an issue with this ad right now however...the link doesn't work like it's supposed to. It should take you to www.trashvoyage.com and it's supposed to be a complimentary ad from SCUBABOARD to support the cause.

I created the ad on a whim and submitted it to my contacts at SCUBABOARD HQ (thus the similarity to my Shaka Divers Banner that usually runs here) and there was a mix-up in it's placement. It was intended to actually be in a more heavy traffic area than here in Hawaii Ohana (undetermined at this point).

I will be in touch with the Admin guys to get this straightened out. SCUBABOARD was going to be kind enough to run the ad to assist. It was a very generous offer of them. When everyone lends a hand a big job is more easily tackled. Drew is running out of time. I feel strongly about this cause and am trying to do whatever I can to spread the word on my very limited budget. Today I ordered 2 dozen recycled shopping bags to use as give aways or promo materials to gain attention. I think education is the #1 way to begin tackling this situation...even if it's not as bad as people say it is, I figure it will only get worse if nothing changes. I come in contact with Ocean minded people all the time so it's an easy "sell' me.

Can you guys think of ways to help Drew raise the much needed money? All suggestions are welcome.

Well I am going to have a fundraiser night of rockin reggae music on Friday June 5th at Haleiwa Joe's. I will have more info in the next week, but this is the initial announcement.
Featuring the music of Sheriff Brown...a group of local Kahuku boys that started playing in our garage 6 yrs ago, and now are ready to cut a CD.
So any of you all on Oahu who want to have a fun night with good jams on da north shore, mark your calanders...June 5th - Haleiwa Joe's - Start time TBD
Door proceeds going to support the voyage, so please bring your friends...its also the last night before I fly to LA, so it's a cast off party of sorts!
