I admit, I have only read the first few post on this thread and the last few. I was curious if anyone has mentioned how the rigs create fantastic artificial reefs, promote new marine life habitats and are awesome to dive?

Cant agree more. Just think of the great diving you will get with those rigs. Check out this site and see what they do. http://www.ecorigs.org/ Oh and just as an aside there were no spills even when rigs were completely knocked over by hurricanes.

The problem is, we drill oil more eco friendly than the thrid world which might be supplying us now.

We have oil dereks off my house in Santa Barbara and they were pretty at night.
