Date: 10/10/2004
Dive Location: San Diego, Ancient Sea Cliffs
Time: 8:22am
Bottom Time: 31:20
Max Depth: 107 feet
Vis: 10-15 feet
Wave height: Big swells, on a boat so no "waves"
Temp at depth: 55 degrees
Surface Temp: 57 degrees
Comments: Met Roy, Dan and Simon at Shelter Island near the SD airport. We waited for a 5th person but he didn't show up, so we headed out. Shelter Island is right near the dive site, so it took us just 20 minutes or so to get to our dive site.We all got in the water, decending down the anchor line until we reached the anchor in 65 feet of water. We took a bearing and headed 270 and headed down as we explored the different scructure the cliffs offer. Surge was moderate and the water had lots of particles, but it improved at depth. We saw lots of rockfish, nudis, red gorgonain, I was trying out a new wetsuit which was warm, but I felt strange so I wasn't able to explore as much. All in all it was a nice dive. We ran out of bottom time and
came up with 1000 psi.

Date: 10/10/2004
Dive Location: San Diego, New Hope Rock
Time: 9:59am
Bottom Time: 44:40
Max Depth: 44 feet
Vis: 5-10 feet
Wave height: Big swells, on a boat so no "waves"
Temp at depth: 59 degrees
Surface Temp: 59 degrees
Comments: Roy only brought 1 tank so I went with Simon and Dan for the last dive. New Hope Rock is a big rock with overhangs and openings critters can live in. We circled the rock slowly looking for critters, trying to navigate through the significant surge. We saw 2 eels, several blacksmith, some sheephead, a beautiful snubnose sculpin, and several more sculpins who were all lounging with lobster and rockfish inside the rock structure. I'm sure this site is very impressive in better conditions. I enjoyed it anyway, my wetsuit feeling more comfortable on the 2nd dive!

Date: Sunday, 10/10
Site: Everywhere in Laguna
Dive Time: 0 minutes
Comments: Met up with a buddy and walked down to Shaw's. 3 - 4 footers with coming in, with foam all over the cove, a bright green line shooting out of the notch .. indicates stong current, and muddy water all over the cove. After watching the conditions for awhile, including all the folks getting knocked over in the surf, decided that it was a) diveable but b) not worth the hassle. Checked a few other sites, but they seemed to be the same. Looks like dive #300 will have to wait ...

Date: 10/11/04
Dive Location: Palos Verdes, Malaga Cove
Bottom Time: 00

I got to Malaga at 8:25pm, waves were 3’+ in sets of 11, with a 30 second interval. After hanging around the gazebo for 20min 3 divers came up saying that visibility was less than 2' at 15' depth  . A night dive with these conditions isn’t worth the risk; I'll wait for Wednesday's night dive.

Max Depth: 61 feet

Surge: 5 feet at times

Fantastic dive last night off the coast of Dana Point. We motored around for a bit watching the sonar, and looking for good structure. After we set the hook, we dropped straight down into great conditions on top of a nice litte reef. We saw all the usual criters and spotted about 20 eels and most were guarding big bugs.
6 lobsters finaly made it into my bag, and 7 in my buddies. He took care of the dinner tab :)

Date: 10/12/2004
Dive Location: La Jolla Shores - Dump
Time: 4:00pm
Bottom Time: 37min
Max Depth: 81 ft
Vis: 15-25 ft
Wave height: 0-1 ft
Temp at depth: 56 degrees
Surface Temp: 65 degrees
Comments: Met Sean, Paul, Simon and Jessica at the Shores for a dusk dive. We headed out north of the lifeguard tower and out beyond the pier. We decended into about 35 feet of water and headed west to find the canyon. We found the slope and headed down to about 70 feet and the area I called 'the dump'. We found lots of stuff and none of the usual things! We found 3 masks and snorkles, 2 pair of sunglasses, another snorkle, a bunch of golf balls, a towel, a sweatshirt, a pair of shorts and 2 pairs of swimmer's goggles. No fish really - just skelatons of dead crab and not much else! It was cool I think - I like finding stuff under water!

Date: 10/12/2004
Dive Location: La Jolla Shores - Dump again
Time: 6:30pm
Bottom Time: 39min
Max Depth: 72 ft
Vis: 15-25 ft
Wave height: 0-1 ft
Temp at depth: 55 degrees
Surface Temp: 65 degrees
Comments: Roy joined us for a second dive and Simon and Jessica went to get air fills at OEX and a pizza for us to grub on before the next dive. We headed out north of the lifeguard tower and out beyond the pier again - thinking we were heading for the south end of the north wall. We decended into about 45 feet of water and headed west to find the canyon. We found the slope and headed down to about 70 feet and found the same dead crab shell we found the first time! Oh no...the dump again! We saw a few fish, an octopus, a large halibut and a fringehead. So it was good, just not great. I have been spoiled with some really good dives at the Shores lately...so this one kind of balanced the others out!

Wave height: 1 foot with the occasional larger set
Temp at depth: 64 Suunto degrees

Tide information: HIGH 9:16 PM 5.8 feet Low tide 3:36 PM 0.3 feet
Comments:
This spot is famous for its dirty water. Normally when you are diving your are thinking “I need a hot shower,….. a very long hot shower,….with disinfectant!”. Tonight the water was clean and crystal clear with exceptional visibility. A real pleasure. Visibility was limited only by the strength of your light.

Tonight’s objective: Lobster hunting. Saw several hundreds of small baby lobsters about ½ to 1 inch long. Shine you light on the rocks or into a hole and you were greeted by a sea of eyes reflecting back the light. Several baby lobsters were out crawling on the rocks. We are talking less than thumb size here. Spotted 4 or so potentially legal bugs but I was off on my smash and grab tonight and came home empty handed. For some idiotic reason I kept trying to grab them. I know that only leads to a hand full of water, you have to smash and then grab. But such is life. The water quality tonight was the best I have seen this site with clear clean water. Spotted two octopi out swimming around, about 1 foot to 18 inches from tip of head to end of tentacle. Tons of scropionfish in the rocks. Saw several other fish of the usual variety and some big ones hiding in among the rocks. No luck hunting, but was rewarded with a nice dive just the same.
