I suspect that datamasks are the future ("Literally zero viz? Diving in wet cement? No problem!"), but personally I am waiting for a combination of technology to refine a bit and for the price to come down a bit.

..... .I cannot position the mask so that when I look down I see the display......

Oh well ..... you can always use the virtual version

I have to agree with Rhone Man, the idea is great and has many practical applications. However, the level of technology is still too undeveloped. Once all the electronics can fit into a compartment the size of an iPod shuffle, and has gone way down in price ( my price range is fairly limited ) then I would consider buying it. Until then I'll stick with my old fashioned computer.

I've had mine for 2+ years and I love it! I shoot a lot of photos underwater and it's very nice to make an entire dive without ever looking for my PDC. There are times when I'm stalking a macro critter where moving the camera housing to look at a PDC would mean starting over. With the Datamask, I don't have to. The info I need is right in front of my eyes.

I'll agree there are shortcomings and that it's not for everyone. But everyone I know who has tried or bought one loves it.

How does it work on presbyopes??....

Compared to my technical diving computers, it tends to be a very conservative computer.

I'm very surprised by that statement. The Pelagic Pressure Systems decompression algorithm is generally considered one of the most liberal. The only computer I've dived that is slightly more liberal is a Cochran. I'd be interested to know what "technical" computers are significantly more liberal.

Good diving, Craig

I just bought mine, and absolutely love diving with it, but I am about to go insane trying to get the connection established to download my data to my PC. I have been trying for over an hour now with no luck. Any advice?

I am dumbfounded that Oceanic would actually produce and distribute such a horrible and poorly designed product. Great concept and in water use. Absolutely ridiculous design for the PC connection. A monkey could have done better.

what I do to connect mine is lay it on my lap so when i look down i can see the screen. have the USB part plugged into the computer have the DiveLog section opened. and plug it into the Mask and watch the screen you will see the "PC" show up dont move the mask from your Lap. You may have to plug/unplug the cable from the mask a couple time but shold work quickly.

Well, after four hours of failed attempts last night, I called Oceanic today. I was fully prepared to take the mask back to the LDS today for a refund. Fortunately, I suppose, Ron at Oceanic determined I have the wrong cable. I called the LDS, and they ordered the correct cable, which is part number 04.9606. The LDS confirmed they ordered the correct part on the purchase order, and also confirmed the correct part was listed on the shipping invoice. Unfortunately, someone dropped part number 04.9600 in the box instead, which absolutely will not work with this computer, although it looks close enough to cause hours of frustrating attempts. Anyway, I love the in-water function of the mask enough to wait for the LDS to order to correct part again, and hope for Oceanic to ship the correct one this time, and give it another go.

I will say that I just had my Atom 2.0 at Oceanic for service a week ago. They customer service and technical support is first rate. I love their products and generally their service, so I'll give them the chance to make this right.

I have a data mask, and I don't dive without it(unless I need to use a full face mask). I am actually on my second one. The first had several hundred dives on it before the first stage sending unit failed. Sent into Oceanic for fix/calibration and it was lost. They sent a new one. As for diving with it, the ability to see the info you need while keeping hands free is first rate. This is really important for me in low vis situations. Diving is so much easier with this mask. The black frame makes it easier for using a camera and seeing the digital displays.
