This quote came from the PADI Bashers thread. However after reading it, I had a small epiphany.

TSandM:
Quotation from John Cronin's essay on the beginning of PADI, in The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving, p 1-53 ... "The reason divers then were such purists is that they put up with so much BS to get there. ":

No truer words have ever been typed and I confess that have been guilty of this stupidity and arrogance as well.
If ScubaBoard has taught me anything, it is that there is always some SOB that thinks he/she knows more than you. Has been to greater depths, can make their gas last for hours, they need no lead and have been diving longer than Jacque Cousteau. In addition, if you don’t have a Drysuit, wear three computers, use a Halcyon BP/W and a set of Salvo lights, your going to get bent or die. These and other seemingly circular arguments all seem to fall into the “My dad can beat up your dad.”, round file of adolescent crap.

Now, I dive just to have fun! Now that I’m older and a touch wiser, I regret not figuring this out years ago. All those wasted dives, the hundreds of dives just for the money, not much fun.

Now, with my lovely bride, we are looking forward to even the simplest of dives at Catalina staring at the kelp forests and just playing around with the curious Garibaldi. We are waiting impatiently to dive the clear warm waters of Kona this June.

Dive Safe! – Have fun! – Continue to learn and practice but don’t waste time in hand wringing over issues that have little importance in your life.

Dave

OTOH, Don’t get me started of virtues of Lie Neilson!

There's only one reasonable response to those types ... :blinking:

Been waiting for quite a while to see type of comment. And couldn't agree with it more! To all the 0-24 or 100-199 or 499-999 (like me), or "I'm a fish", etc. ego-centric, opinionated, LDS instructor quoting, know-it-all, "experts" who don't know enough to realize they don't know it all: "Pardon him, Theodotus: he is a barbarian, and thinks the customs of his tribe and isalnd are the laws of nature."-GBS
Thanks, Teamcasa

I don't know it all? Why, I didn't know that!!

Diving for me is work, work, work... and I'm having fun, fun, fun doing it. You and your lovely bride keep going for all the gusto you can here, there and everywhere, Dave!

The reason I dive has little to do with technical proficiency, or how deep I can go, or how long I can stay under... but it has a lot to do with maximizing safety for the dives I do (within reasonable parameters), and most importantly enjoying all the critters I encounter while down under. Every dive brings me somethin new... but I'm still waiting for my "lovely bride" to materialize!

This is NOT to say there are not well-founded reasons to be concerned about the training other divers receive. After all, we may be called upon to rescue them at some point... or (shudder) they us.

Damn. I guess I'll have to get rid of my cramp-preventing Force Fns now that I know that I look like a dork with them on. And my quacker has to go too. And my Speedos. Naaaaah. At 67 who gives a s***? Get over it Duuuuuudes.

Dave, so well said. Next time we're on the Sundiver I'll buy you a beverage.

Bravo, well said - and ya know, off Catalina you can find deep cold water and can make that dive with a jacket BC, yoke reg and an octopus; and let me date myself, a SeaVue gauge! (and maybe even duck feet!!!)

enjoy, have fun, say hey to the angel sharks for me
